Ben Carson is In the Race

Ben Carson made official what everyone has known for a year or so now, which is that he’s running for the Republican presidential nomination. I’m almost giddy about this, of course, because it means we’re in for a lot more of this kind of inane rhetoric:

Not only is Obamacare the “worst thing” since slavery, Carson told the 2013 Values Voter Summit, but it also “is slavery in a way because it is making all of us subservient to the government.”

In an interview the next year, Carson said that Obamacare is worse than the September 11, 2011 attacks, later suggesting that Obama wanted to “take over health care” in order to “take control” and build a “socialist/communist” country. “If there were no Fox News and if there was no conservative radio, we would already be Cuba,” he said, after warning that Obama won’t be “happy unless Fox News were shut down and there was no more criticism of his actions.”…

According to Carson, the U.S. is “very much like Nazi Germany.” The problem goes all the way to the top, Carson explains, warning that the Obama administration is “acting like the Gestapo” and recommending that Americans read “Mein Kampf” if they want to understand President Obama: “We live in a Gestapo age. People don’t realize it.”

“Think about Nazi Germany,” Carson said last year. “Most of those people did not believe in what Hitler was doing. But did they speak up? Did they stand up for what they believe in? They did not, and you saw what happened. And if you believe that same thing can’t happen again, you’re very wrong.”

Keep on bringing it, Dr. Carson. The wingnuts will love you for it and so will I.

Huckabee announced today he’s also in the running. Did God personally tell all of these guys to run? I guess if he tells enough people, one of them is bound to win through sheer luck.

  • Alverant

Oh yes, Carson read “Mein Kamph” and compare for yourself how many time it priases God and Jesus to how many times it praises evolution and homosexuality. If you had any self-awareness, you’d be surprised at what you find.

I just saw my first Ben Carson for president bumper sticker on my way to work this morning! Something about “America Needs A Doctor – Stat!” I swear I nearly wrecked my car I was laughing so hard.

“We live in a Gestapo age. People don’t realize it.”

Gestapo: an abbreviation for German words meaning “secret state police”.

Does anybody want to try to deny we have a growing phenomenon of exactly that?

  • eric

So is Carly Fiorina. I can’t wait for the debate: “Obama…Hitler, or Satan?”

  • regexp

What i found amusing is that on my (slow) drive home last night in SoCal a family was holding up Carson for President signs on the overpass over the highway.

  • StevoR

Well, that’s nice – Trump still pretending to run too? Can’t have enough comedy can we?

(Of course the problem with political jokes is that they do tend to be elected!)

So who’s officially in for the race to be runner up to Hillary Clinton so far – Cruz, Rand Paul, Ben Carson, Jeb Bush, Huckabee, Rubio, Santorum, Trump?

Vs Hilary Clinton (*cough*shoe in, *cough*) and Bernie Sanders. Yeah?

    (Checks wikipedia :

Terry Jones the Koran burner wannabee dafuck?

A Transhumanist party candidate and ineligable on grounds of youth rapper I ain’t herad of and lots, lots more .. Whoah, sheesh, its gunna be a long two years or so ain’t it?

  • blf

Ok, so with the Cantthinkson and the Huckster now in the Kandidate Klown Kar, will they soon have to add some sidecars? Or just strap a few to the roof?

  • thompjs

An early Christmas present for Ed!

  • StevoR

Must admit I’d kinda like to see Al Gore have a go as well.

  • StevoR

Pity is Gore wasn’t POTUS in 2000. How different history would be. Doubt he’ll run and expect Hillary Clinton to win easily in both her races here but still.

  • tmscott

Oh, I think Huckabee should definitely be a strap on. :-)

  • StevoR

    @ wscott :

“I just saw my first Ben Carson for president bumper sticker on my way to work this morning! Something about “America Needs A Doctor – Stat!” I swear I nearly wrecked my car I was laughing so hard.”

So that sign was prophetic -almost – then? I mean you nearly did need a doctor!

  • StevoR

FWIW, My 2016 US POTUS race prediction : A Clinton vs Bush rerun with Jeb losing in a (metaphorical) landslide. TThen Hillary winning in the next one too.

Also FWIW pretty sure i got the last one right with Obama vs Rmoney ..

Let’s not forget Carly Fiorina whose claim to fame was almost bringing HP to its knees during her reign as CEO. I bet she won’t talk about her firing. It is claimed that she fired 30,000 employees while CEO before getting the heave ho herself.

“We live in a Gestapo age. People don’t realize it.”

If there’s one thing that defined the Gestapo, it’s that no one was afraid of it because they didn’t know it was there.

    @7:

So who’s officially in for the race to be runner up to Hillary Clinton so far – Cruz, Rand Paul, Ben Carson, Jeb Bush, Huckabee, Rubio, Santorum, Trump?

Here are the declared and exploratory candidates for presidency. There are a number of geographically local candidates you won’t recognize. But from your GOP list, the official declared candidates are: yes, yes, yes, no, no, yes, no, no.

In an interview the next year, Carson said that Obamacare is worse than the September 11, 2011 attacks…

In fairness that might be true. I tried to research if in fact there were any such attacks and ran into difficulty because all the search results were about the much better known attacks of September 11, 2001.

In a different kind of fairness, it isn’t what Carson said in the cited interview.

Maybe we could borrow Mitt Romney’s dog carrier? (I never understood why people made such a big deal about that one — I mean, as long as the dog didn’t mind, which apparently it didn’t.)

daved @ # 20: … as long as the dog didn’t mind, which apparently it didn’t.

The reports I read had it that the dog reacted with a major case of diarrhea, which seems rather like a thumbs-down reaction from an organism without thumbs.

Unfortunately for this sound bite, Carson is no longer a doctor. (Surely his license to practice has expired…)

  • grumpyoldfart

The wingnuts will love you for it and so will I.

One day one of these clowns will manage to seduce the voting public. Then it will be too late. Your goose will be cooked.

  • Kevin Kehres

All these people getting donations from right-wing billionaires, giving those donations to hard-working campaign staff, PR people, catering companies…renting campaign HQs…buying ad space online, in newspapers, TV, magazines…

Let’s call this what it is … it’s a miracle.

Wealth redistribution at its finest. Keep it up, Republicans!!

The more, the merrier, I say–the more of these clowns running around, the more likely none of them will get elected as they try to out-pander each other with the base and spend time and money attacking each other

  • StevoR

@17. eric : Thanks for that – good link and site there.

  • caseloweraz

According to that site, 38 candidates have declared for the presidential campaign. They break down as follows:

    Republican: 15

    Democrat: 7

    Independent/3rd-party: 16

    Re caseloweraz @ #24

I wasn’t aware that Carson had lost his license to practice medicine. In fact, he hasn’t been retired from Johns Hopkins that long.

  • caseloweraz

According to Wikipedia, he retired from Johns Hopkins in July 2013: In March 2013, Carson announced he would retire as a surgeon, stating “I’d much rather quit when I’m at the top of my game”.[16] His retirement became official on July 1, 2013.[17]

I don’t know for a fact that he’s no longer licensed, but why would someone who’s chosen to retire from practice be able to remain licensed?

  • caseloweraz

His official campaign Web site still claims he’s a doctor.

And this site still lists him as accepting patients. I read the reviews; a woman in Kenya implored him in May 2014 to help her daughter. It’s disgusting that they haven’t removed his entry.

  • colnago80

    Re caseloweraz @ #32

Probably he has retired from doing surgery but I an not aware that the medical licensing boards take away a physicians license just because he has retired from a university position.

  • colnago80

    Re caseloweraz @ #33

According to the link you posted, he is still affiliated with the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Even if he prefers not to be a primary surgeon himself, he would still be valuable as an assistant in surgery to someone else.

  • caseloweraz

I did do some searching on this. I found on Answers-dot-com an answer to the question “Is Ben Carson still a doctor?” The answer was “Yes” — just the one word, not even a period, and no identification of the source. The site asks for feedback: Is this answer useful? My answer was “No”.

None of the news articles I found that discuss his becoming a candidate touch on this question. His bio at JHU waxes enthusiastic about his surgical triumphs; but it is dated 2004. I would ask at his campaign site if I could figure out how.

I suppose there could be separate licenses for the neurosurgery and the basic medical things a GP would handle. Carson might retain the latter type of license for some time.

  • Hoosier X

Maybe we could borrow Mitt Romney’s dog carrier? (I never understood why people made such a big deal about that one — I mean, as long as the dog didn’t mind, which apparently it didn’t.)

If I recall correctly, the source for Seamus’s feelings on the subject was Mitt Romney, so pardon me if I am dubious.

One source said that Seamus jumped out of the cage when they reached their destination and ran away, never to be seen again. What actually happened to Seamus is something of a mystery.

I think the main thing that initially gave the story legs was the way it was used in a book about Romney. Because Romney figured out that they should stop the car and hose off the dog and the vehicle, the book said that this take-charge attitude showed that Romney should be president. (Because Al Gore or Joe Biden would presumably panic and drive off a bridge if there was dog poop on the side of the car. Or something. I think non-Romney candidates should get credit for not strapping the family dog to the roof in the first place. But then I’m not a GOP goon.)

    Re dingojack @ #22

Hey, Tony Abbot blots his copybook.

  • caseloweraz

In thinking further about the question of whether Ben Carson is still a doctor, I’ve decided that Colnago80 is probably right on this question. It is surprisingly hard to find an explicit answer to the question online — even from state medical boards, which handle the licensing of doctors who practice within their borders.

However, the long and short of it seems to be that certification is granted by a specific hospital or other institution, and requires periodic re-examination, while a physician license (unlike a driver’s license) is generally permanent unless the license holder somehow screws the pooch, so to speak.

  • dingojack

SLC – ‘Blots his copybook’?* Tones is the blot!

    Dingo

    * Or perhaps he didn’t. Protocol is that you bring your partner if the head of state brings his/her partner. Tones didn’t, therefore the Australian Representative in Paris, shouldn’t.

    (It’s a little bit complicated).
