Dobson’s Magnum Opus Against Marriage Equality

James Dobson wrote a letter to his followers, published in the Worldnetdaily, declaring that the Supreme Court is “on the verge of destroying the family” by allowing gay people to get married and…form families. The screed is every bit as nonsensical as one would expect.

May I urge you to read this letter carefully? It has been written with a fervent prayer that you will recognize the urgency it conveys.

Oh yes, I will read the letter carefully. But I must warn you: Your prayers have no influence here. I’ll be using my brain.

I do not recall a time when the institutions of marriage and the family have faced such peril, or when the forces arrayed against them were more formidable or determined. Barring a miracle, the family that has existed since antiquity will likely crumble, presaging the fall of Western civilization itself.

The fall of Western civilization itself! Hey, what about Eastern civilization? Do they not have families there? Or do you just not care about them? And how on earth are “marriage and the family” going to “crumble” without any actual marriages or families being affected? Is your marriage and family going to be destroyed, Mr. Dobson? Are you going to stop loving your wife and disown your kids because gay people are allowed to get married? Is that going to happen to anyone you know? Anyone in the entire world, for that matter? And if it did, wouldn’t that say a lot about the straight people in those marriages and families, if they would just crumble at the thought of gay people getting married too?

For more than 50 years, the homosexual activist movement has sought to implement a master plan that has had as its centerpiece the destruction or redesign of the family.

It’s true. It all began at a secret meeting that included George Soros, Saul Alinsky, Barack Obama and the ghosts of Josef Stalin, Karl Marx and the prophet Muhammad. It was held at an underground lair deep in the ground beneath — where else? — San Francisco. That lair was once used by Dr. Evil. Coincidence? I think not.

Many of these objectives have largely been realized, including widespread support of the gay lifestyle, discrediting of Scriptures that condemn homosexuality or sexual immorality, muzzling of the clergy and Christian media, inclusion of gays and lesbians in all branches of the military, granting of special privileges and rights in the law, overturning laws prohibiting pedophilia, indoctrinating children and future generations through public education, and securing all the legal benefits of marriage for any two or more people who claim to have homosexual tendencies.

Muzzling of the clergy and Christian media? I guess we’re just imagining the thousands and thousands of sermons, articles, columns and websites screaming against LGBT equality every day. Yes, we’re definitely muzzling anti-gay speech in the Christian media, as proven by the fact that you said this in an anti-gay column in the Christian media. And what laws prohibiting pedophilia have been overturned? Please name one.

By promoting what is known as LGBT, we must remember that the “B” stands for bisexuality. That would include acceptance of sexual relations between both genders in groups and among every category of sexual expression outside the bonds of marriage. Now the proponents of LGBT seek to legalize gay and lesbian marriage, which could mean anything or nothing in a few years.

Uh, yeah. You have no idea what bisexual means, dumbass.

Let’s put this issue in perspective. The institution of the family is one of the Creator’s most marvelous and enduring gifts to humankind. It was revealed to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and then described succinctly in Genesis 2:24, where we read, “For this cause, a man shall leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and they shall be one flesh.” With those 20 words, God announced the ordination of male-female marriage, long before He established the two other great human institutions, the church and
the government.

There’s just one tiny little problem with this: There was no Adam and Eve. No garden of Eden. This is all mythology, not reality. It’s like basing your position on public policy on a Dr. Seuss book.

At least 5,000 years have come and gone since that point of origin, yet every civilization in the history of the world has been built upon it. Despite today’s skeptics who claim that marriage is an outmoded and narrow-minded Christian concoction, the desire of men and women to “leave” and “cleave” has survived and thrived through times of prosperity, famine, wars, peace, epidemics, tyranny, and every other circumstance and human condition. It has been the bedrock of culture in Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America, Australia and even Antarctica. Given this history, one might begin to suspect that something mystical exists within human nature that draws the sexes together – not just for purposes of reproduction as with animals – but to satisfy an inexpressible longing for spiritual bonding. Indeed, how can it be doubted? Clearly, our loving Creator placed the desire for intimacy and companionship deep within men and women – and referred to everything he had made and pronounced it “very good” (Genesis 1:31).

Actually, no, there’s nothing “mystical” about it. Yes, most human beings, like most of any species, have a very strong instinct toward reproducing. If they didn’t, the species would not be here. But you see, this is exactly why all your bullshit about this “destroying marriage” is nonsense. Whether we allow same-sex marriage or not, nearly everyone is still going to partner up and have babies. Allowing gay people to get married will do absolutely nothing to prevent anyone who wants to get married and have children from doing so.

It goes on like this for several thousand more words, all of them equally inane.

discrediting of Scriptures that condemn homosexuality or sexual immorality

Sorry, Jimmy. You’ve got no one to blame for this one but yourself and your fellow pulpit pounders. You’ve been telling people for years to read their Bibles. Guess what? The quickest way to discredit scripture is to actually read it.

Actually….”leave your parents and cleave to your spouse” is pretty good advice. If more people did that, and the parents accepted it, the agony aunt business would pretty much dry up and blow away.

If the religious right would be so kind as to refrain from trying muck about with OTHER PEOPLES marriages, everyone involved would be a lot happier as well.

(My wife and I–we’ve been married for 44 years–have followed that policy on both ends. We never let our parents interfere with our marriage and we accept and take a “hands off” approach to our kids marriages.)

  • theguy

So, to summarize Dobshite here, gay sexual desire is badzorz and may not even exist*, but opposite-sex romantic attraction is supposed to be proof of God? And what culture exists in Antarctica?

What does Dobshite expect to happen? Gay people are to magically give up their sexual orientation, turn straight and pump out babies. Well, I guess he’s ignorant about everything else from human history to biology.

*”securing all the legal benefits of marriage for any two or more people who claim to have homosexual tendencies.”

So people are pretending to be gay just for tax breaks? It’s the other way around; some gay people who’ve been pressured into pretending to be straight marry someone of the opposite sex.

So long as the camp has good internet connectivity and enough room for our–estimated–5000 books, and I get let out for the occasion SF or gaming con, I’m good. Just make sure my new spouse is young and healthy enough to do all the house- and yard-work, as well as support me in the style to which I’d like to become accustomed. I’ll just sneak out ans spend time with my wife. (And, oh yes, supply here with a similar young, healthy and well-heeled spouse, too.

It’s like basing your position on public policy on a Dr. Seuss book.

There are several Seuss books that can serve as the basis for not-at-all-bad public policy. There are Seuss books promoting understanding of the other, preserving the environment and taking life with a smile.

Well, there they go again. Sure is a shame how they’re being muzzled. That’s all I hear them talking about these days.

  • John Pieret

Here’s how he ended his screed:

Let me summarize my concerns this way: Down one path are millions of strong and vibrant families with their children growing up in the fear and admonition of the Lord. Down the other path is a nation drifting away from its spiritual roots in a culture that will teach a dangerous ideology to today’s younger generation and those yet to come.

In other words, their recruitment of children will be hampered and their churches will continue hemorrhaging members. Always follow the money.

What can we do to save the nation? Prayer is our only hope,

    Well, that’s good news!

but it is a powerful one.

Have a list of when it’s worked?

Even at this late hour, the Lord could still respond to the petitions of millions of godly people. Shirley and I are among those who are praying for a miracle. Will you join us?

I have a suggestion: you, of all people, know that God especially favors prayers on special days. In order to get your way within society, you should pray especially hard on election days. Lock yourselves inside and pray all day, never leaving home. That will have a miraculous effect on the nation.

I was curious about the last word in:

[Marriage] has been the bedrock of culture in Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America, Australia and even Antarctica.

Is Antarctica the poster child for traditional marriage Mr Dobson hopes it is? I researched it and the answer would seem to be … well, not exactly.

This site gives advance for those considering working there. Among other gems it says:

Just don’t come down here expecting a good love life (unless you’re a woman, in which case the odds are good but the goods are odd).

The population is maybe 30 percent women, 68 percent men, and 2 percent of some androgynous sort that resist being categorized.

    condoms are freely distributed

The gay and lesbian communities are there, if usually discreet. Significant-others, whatever your gender preference, may share a room. Heck, they sometimes even allow a married couple to live in the same room with each other.

going to Antarctica is very hard on relationships back home. Many workers who had good, loving significant-others before coming to the Ice have returned to find their bank accounts cleaned out and divorce papers in the mail.
