Huckabee’s Hysterical Nonsense About the Gay ‘Lifestyle’

Is there a phrase more meaningless than “gay lifestyle”? It’s a cliche repeated endlessly by anti-gay bigots, but there simply isn’t any such thing. In a new “special report” on the Billy Graham website, Mike Huckabee makes the bizarre argument that if you make a “lifestyle” a civil right, you criminalize opposition to it.

A decision in favor of same-sex marriage would set off an unprecedented avalanche of threats on religious liberties, potentially affecting virtually every church, pastor, ministry and Christian-owned business.

“The implications are staggering,” Staver said.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee warns that it could even lead to the “criminalization of Christianity.”

“When you elevate a lifestyle to the status of a civil right, I don’t think a lot of believers fully understand or comprehend that once it’s risen to that level and our government accepts it, then anyone who disagrees with it could be at least civilly liable, but more than likely would be criminally liable,” Huckabee, a Republican presidential candidate, told Decision during a recent visit to the Billy Graham Library.

“The impact is this: A pastor getting up in the pulpit and proclaiming God’s Word that marriage is the act of one man and woman joining together for life would violate the civil rights of a same-sex couple. … That would make it a criminal act.”

This is stupidity on roller skates. First of all, being gay is not a “lifestyle.” That words means “the habits, attitudes, tastes, moral standards, economic level, etc., that together constitute the mode of living of an individual or group.” Gay people share none of those things, they comprise every imaginable tastes, moral standards, economic level, habits and so forth. You know what comes much closer to that definition? A religion. And we’ve already elevated religion to a civil right (by the same reasoning being used here, that is). We already forbid discrimination on the basis of religion. And yet, we also have not made opposition to or criticism of religion into a crime. Gee, it’s almost like Huckabee is a demagogue who is completely full of shit.

Huckabee’s Hysterical Nonsense About the Gay ‘Lifestyle’

    FIFY

  • hunter

Well, he may have a point about “Christians” being criminals — look at some of his big supporters, like the Duggars.

Although that has nothing to do with being anti-gay. It has to do with being lying scumbags.

  • eric

Gee, it’s almost like Huckabee is a demagogue who is completely full of shit.

Yeah, but as a liberal you should be cheering him on. He wants to keep SSM an issue in the GOP primary, and he’s doing a pretty good job of it. If he gets his way, the GOP primary will be a knife fight in a rubber lifeboat; the winner gets the privilege of being eaten by the shark last.

  • Saad

Yeah, you know the lifestyle where you eat, talk, laugh, cry, enjoy the company of your loved ones, work, play, sleep. The gay lifestyle.

  • StevoR

Also whaddya mean “almost” like Huckabee is a demagogue who is completely full of shit? What part of him isn’t?

    (The bit that drips Santorum?)

PS. Confused to learn that Rick “Oops!” Perry announced his POTUS run today – thought that’d already been done a while ago, must have confused him for Santorum what is santorum or Huckabee or the other thirty odd hateful Xn bigots running for the repub nom I guess..

  • Artor

“…I don’t think a lot of believers fully understand or comprehend…”

That statement, taken in isolation, is actually correct. The rest of the word-things that come out of Huckabee’s pie-hole are complete & utter bullshit.

When you elevate a lifestyle to the status of a civil right

Like elevating the Conservative Christian “lifestyle” to a civil right?

I don’t think a lot of believers fully understand or comprehend that once it’s risen to that level and our government accepts it, then anyone who disagrees with it could be at least civilly liable, but more than likely would be criminally liable

Like how I, who disagrees with the Conservative Christian lifestyle, could be at least civilly liable [well, sure, if I was a baker and refused to bake a wedding cake for a Southern Baptist opposite sex marriage just because they were Southern Baptists, with their history of racism, I could run afoul of anti discrimination laws], but more than likely would be criminally liable [not a chance in “hell” … go ahead and fucking try it!].

The impact is this: A pastor getting up in the pulpit and proclaiming God’s Word that marriage is the act of one man and woman joining together for life would violate the civil rights of a same-sex couple. … That would make it a criminal act

A pastor getting up in the pulpit and proclaiming God’s Word that the “lifestyle” of atheism is against God’s Word would then be a criminal offense.

You’re fortunate that being stupid or a liar or both is not a criminal offense!

Look, once you elevate homosexualism to a right you criminalize Christianity. Everybody knows it should be the other way around.

    Gay Agenda.

Huckabee feels threatened if everyone has fabulous drapes and a throw rug or two.

  • roggg

Got it. It’s very dangerous to elevate lifestyle choices to civil rights. Like religion right? By elevating religious freedom to a civil right, anyone who disagrees with that religion would be AT LEAST civilly liable if not criminally. We need to repeal all protected rights and freedoms in the name of freedom. Only by eliminating all freedoms can we ever truly be free.

  • Mr Ed

Reading this confirms that Huckabee does not take himself as a serious presidential candidate. He is just updating his resume to get a few more years on Fox and a few speaking fees from the Christian martyr circuit. Political speech is protected and religious speech is protected a perfect place for a grifter or Huckster.

I resent your linking this to Roller Skates!

While obviously I agree with the general point, I wouldn’t go so far as to say that there is nothing inherently different about the life of a gay person relative to the life of a heterosexual one. From observing and listening to gay friends I’ve had, the same-same attraction creates a different social dynamic. For example, if heterosexual me has a problem with a sexual advance made by hetero friend Bob to my wife, I might call Bob aside and have a conversation about it. But there’s no risk of Bob doing so to me while we have that convo. Heterosexuals might be adulterous, but not with the same person as adulterous gays could be. And there appears to be no such thing as the stag poker night outside of hetrerosexual land. It’s almost mathematical in its intrigue.

And let’s be clear: these are not things to be demonized or “othered” the way dicks like the Huckster want to. To me it is all part of the great variety of human experience, to be understood, enjoyed and accepted, like all other human experience. We are not all the same, and that’s a good thing. And it makes for the best Oscar parties ever.

Huckabee’s ranting on the `gay lifestyle’ is just a prologue. `Hi, I’m Mike Huckabee, and I’m here for Gay-No-More pills, the revolutionary treatment that will fix your lifestyle, just $99.99 or three easy payments of $59.99.’

  • raven

“When you elevate a lifestyle to the status of a civil right, …

Huckabee’s lifestyle is to lie a lot and amp up the hate to make money from his fellow fundie xians.

It’s basically the lifestyle of a parasite. And a conman.

But he is fortunate that being a parasitic conman throwing dog whistle hate to the fundies is a protected lifestyle. Not only is he still out of jail, but he is getting rich from it.

PS Yeah, Huckabee isn’t a serious candidate. He is doing a Sarah Palin. Run for president, set up your own PAC that spends all its money on….you, and become a leader for the Dark Side of our society and get paid even more.

The GOP is aware of this problem as he isn’t the only one. They said they were going to try to limit the number of candidates. Because even a clown car has finite limits.

I have to wonder, if being gay is merely a lifestyle choice, what’s the point of opposing it? You don’t oppose people’s taste in food, or their choice of hobbies. You may not share their taste, or wish to participate in the hobby yourself, but you don’t oppose it. The very fact that Huckabee wants to oppose this particular lifestyle choice, suggests to me that he’s not really being honest when he uses “the gay lifestyle”.

  • jaybee

    Deen said,

Geez, what isn’t there to get? If we don’t oppose it, then the flawless, infinitely loving God is going to stomp on our testicles for eternity. And for those who don’t have testicles right now, in the afterlife God will give them to you for the purpose of stomping on them. Because he loves us that much.

Over the last few years, the anti-gay rhetoric has been ratcheted up to a level that I like to call “staggering”. When the Supreme Court issues it’s ruling, which I’m hoping will be in favor of SSM, I don’t think I will be able to come up with a word that describes the new level of hatred and bigotry. Any ideas??

On a secondary note, who will be the next anti-gay “leader” that is caught in a homosexual tryst?? I pray to you Thor: let it be Cruz!!!!

When you elevate a lifestyle to the status of a civil right…….

So…….if I were to turn teh gay ( which is apparently possible in his universe) he would be good enough to recognize my right to exist as long as I don’t demand the right to have fabulous drapes and show any interest in Broadway musicals? Or something?

And this ignorant bigot wants to be the President.
