Poll Shows Strong Support for LGBT Equality in Michigan

My friend and former reporter Todd Heywood has a story about a new poll here in Michigan that shows very strong support for LGBT equality, even among Republicans. This as out legislature full of anti-gay bigots continues to throw up bill after bill to damage that cause.

A new poll by Glengariff group and released by WDIV in Detroit has found that the majority of Michigan citizens support legalizing marriage equality, recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states and amending the state’s civil rights law. By a wide margin, most Michiganders oppose religious freedom laws.

The poll of 600 representative Michigan voters, leaders and politicians found an overwhelming majority of Michiganders oppose so-called religious freedom laws, by a margin of 76.5 percent to 18.5 percent.

Support for marriage equality stayed stable at 55.5 percent in favor of approval to 32.5 percent in opposition. In relation to marriages performed outside of the state of Michigan, 61.4 percent of voters supported recognizing those same-sex marriages when the couple moves to Michigan; 27.3 percent oppose such recognition.

Of keen interest, 77 percent of those polled said they supported amending the state’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to protect the LGBT community — a legislation dream unfolding since 1981; 17.9 percent of voters polled opposed amending the state law. The poll found even those voters who identified as strongly Republican supported the amendment to Elliott-Larsen, 70.8 percent to 22 percent. Older voters, aged 65-plus, also broadly supported such an expansion 76.9 percent to 18 percent.

And yet we keep electing raging bigots like Gary Glenn, Todd Courser and Cindy Gamrat to office. I’ll write separately about an appalling set of bills the latter two just submitted.

I remember when a child wizard was a GOP politician. JK Rowling wrote about it, in Harry Potter and the Appalling Set of Bills.

Well, they can’t possibly be conservative anti-gay bigots, ’cause the conservatives keep telling us how important the beliefs of the majority are in this issue.

Let me guess; they have a laser-like focus on the gayconomy?

I looked them up and they are doozies. I’ll let Ed explain but, if passed (which may not be very likely, since the two are feuding with the Speaker of the House), the laws would last about a nanosecond in Federal court.

Of course the polls show so-called “strong” so-called “support” for so-called “gay” so-called “marriage”. Us Christians are too afraid of Obama and The Gays* to admit in public that we’re for Traditional Marriage! Plus, all the Christian florists and bakers can’t take the poll because they’re in jail!

Yep those precious voter pimps that drive their flock to the voting booth are expensive and tend to demand absolutely horrendous pay-back, which they usually get.

But they are, apparently, so fundamental to the democratic process that there is no absolute limit on the dim witted, bigoted, ignorant, pompousness that is promoted via the puppets in the legislature as a big thank you to their mentors in the ecclesiastical cattle drive …and the puppets in the legislature are not known for having an ethical or empathetic bone in their whole body, in fact it is the lack of such unfortunate traits that tend to single out, if not define, the political wannabe’s career in ‘serving’ their country.

    A little OT but –

Now Todd Heywood has become your friend , and therefore retired from reporting, how is he filling his time?

    Curiously,
