Steve King Claims to be Latino

Just when you thought Rep. Steve King’s pronouncements couldn’t get any more bizarre, he goes and claims that he is “as Hispanic and Latino” as Julian Castro. Especially odd, since he has long said that his family’s background is Irish, German and Welsh.

I’m baffled. Absolutely baffled. Is he joking? What would be funny about it if he meant it as a joke? And if not, seriously, WTF? It may be time to start drug testing members of Congress.

It’s not much of an improvement but could he be trying to say that JC is not Latino?

It may be time to start drug testing members of Congress.

It’s a lot more serious than that.

It’s religion!!! Another victim of Fundie Xian Induced Cognitive Impairment.

You can quit drugs easier and treatment is widely available.

It’s also….Iowa!!! Something about living in an area where the dominant life form is corn just turns people’s minds to oatmeal. Michele Bachmann is from Iowa.

    And if not, seriously, WTF?

Yeah, this is a hard one. Putting Steve King’s comment through the Google Fundie to English translator it might mean:

Does he know that I’m as Hispanic and Latino as he? means in English, Fuck Julian Castro and the rest of the Hispanics.

King associates the words “Hispanic” and “Latino” with “illegal alien”, and asserts that since Castro is an American citizen, these terms don’t apply to him.

  • Drew

I’m with D.C> on this one. I don’t think he was trying to claim that he was hispanic, I think he was trying to claim that Castro was not.

The claim doesn’t make anymore sense to me than the converse, but it seems that this was what he was trying to communicate.

He is. Why do you think he has calves like canteloupe?

  • Abby Normal

I think Hercules Grytpype-Thynne @4 pretty much nailed it.

King associates the words “Hispanic” and “Latino” with “illegal alien”, and asserts that since Castro is an American citizen, these terms don’t apply to him.

That’s also the meaning that’s most useful to rational humans, since it allows them to point out that he considers ALL Latinos as not being legally in the USA.

I don’t recall which of the mind-numbingly stupid GOP talking heads it was recently, but someone was bloviating that if you’re an American, you somehow give up whatever ethnicity you had before. I think this is the meme that King is following, but it’s hard to tell because he IS the stupidest man in Congress.

  • eric

So, this is basically like Colbert’s “I don’t see race” spiel, only they aren’t pretending for laughs, they’re really claiming they don’t see ethnic background?

  • busterggi

Clearly King is decended from castaways from the Spanish Armada that landed in Ireland.

From now on, all reporters should refer to Rep. King as “Esteban El Rey”, and the Iowa voting system should use that name on all ballots for his races.

We leave it to Esteban to correct House Speaker Juan Beyñor on using his proper name for Congressional operations.

I think this is the meme that King is following, but it’s hard to tell because he IS the stupidest man in Congress.

Sorry, no. He’s tried, but he’s no Louie Gohmert.

  • caseloweraz

As usual, Modus is first off the mark with the snark. Well played.

  • Michael Heath

Steve King advocates we do ethnic profiling: http://politicalcorrection.org/blog/201003160002.

So if he’s attempting to argue there is no ethnicities amongst American citizens, then he’s contradicting his position on profiling.

  • martinc

There’s a kind of sick justice to the fact that this tweet might cost King some votes.
