What do you get when you take a bunch of bloggers from Freethought Blogs, a couple from Patheos and a couple from Skepchick, then mix in some blogs that have been independent and a few brand new bloggers? You get The Orbit, a brand new atheism and social justice blog network.
They’ve been working on this for a while and I’ve known about it for a while, but have kept quiet about it because I was asked to. I suppose some people might think I’d be mad about it, since I technically still own Freethought Blogs and still handle the financial aspects of the network, but I don’t see how I could possibly be upset. For crying out loud, I left first! I certainly can’t be mad at them for deciding they want to do their own thing.
The bloggers who are leaving FTB and Patheos are all people I consider friends, a few of whom I really care about. I wish them nothing but the best and I’ve offered to help them in any way I can. They asked a few questions while setting it up and they may ask more, and I’m happy to offer whatever value I can from my experience. The truth is that I never got into any FTB/Patheos rivalry in the first place. I’ve had friends at both places all along. And I’m certainly not going to build some non-existent rivalry with The Orbit. There are some great people and great writers there and I encourage you to follow them.I like the fact that the new network will focus on social justice issues. Despite what I think have been some excesses on the part of some over the last few years, I remain absolutely committed to advancing the causes of equality, justice and fairness. Those are the things that animate me, that fuel my passion and energy. I will continue to fight against sexism and misogyny, against homophobia and bigotry, against xenophobia and racism. And I’m happy that others are fighting as well, even if I sometimes disagree with how they do it.
A note on comments: Do not — I repeat, do not — try to turn this into a raging argument over social justice and tactics. Unlike most posts, I will be monitoring the comments on this one and I’m simply going to delete comments that try to rip open old wounds and start new battles. You have been warned. And any denizens of the slymepit or MRAs or other assorted assholes that show up, you’ll be banned the moment I see it and your comments deleted. Don’t even bother. And if you want to scream about free speech, be my guest. I don’t give a fuck. You have no right to comment on my blog. I decide who gets to comment, period.
