If there’s one thing that the Christian right’s adamant support for Donald Trump proves, it’s that all that talk about morality and sin being the root of our problems was a lie. All they really cared about was getting political power and influence, by whatever means necessary. Help me out here, Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council:
Perkins knows about Stormy Daniels, the porn actress who claimed, in a 2011 interview, that in 2006 she had sex with Trump four months after his wife, Melania, gave birth to their son, Barron. He knows of the reports that Daniels (real name: Stephanie Clifford) was paid off to keep the affair quiet in the waning weeks of the 2016 election. He knows about the cursing, the lewdness and the litany of questionable behavior over the past year of Trump’s life or the 70 that came before it.“We kind of gave him—‘All right, you get a mulligan. You get a do-over here,’” Perkins told me in an interview for the latest episode of POLITICO’s Off Message podcast.
Weigh a paid-off porn star against being the first president to address the March for Life live via video feed, and a lot of evangelical leaders insist they can still walk away happy.
Imagine if Barack Obama had an affair with a porn star, paid a huge sum to cover it up and keep her quiet, bragged about grabbing women by their pussies, bragged about being able to peep in on teenage beauty pageant contestants, bragged about getting other men’s wives into bed. Tony Perkins would be excoriating him as the very definition of a lost and deeply immoral nation. He would be claiming that the fact that we elected such a man would bring down the wrath of God upon the nation.
Instead, the man who did all those things was chosen by God himself to lead us! Funny how that works, isn’t it? Power is all they want, the power to impose their religious beliefs on all of us. And they’ll contradict themselves, lie, and support a reprehensible man — and give him a mulligan on all of it — if it gets them influence over the government.
