In yet another press gaggle, Trump repeated the outright lie that the law requires separating children from their parents if they reach the border and used blatant and substanceless fearmongering to justify the policy. He’s having a hard time coming up with a coherent rationale for this, to say the least.
President Trump remained resistant on Monday in the face of growing public outcry over his administration’s policy of separating children from their parents at the border, repeating the false assertion that Democrats were the ones to blame for it, and suggesting that criminals — not parents — were toting juveniles to the United States.
“They could be murderers and thieves and so much else,” Mr. Trump said of the people crossing the border, as he delivered somewhat incongruous remarks during a meeting of the National Space Council on Monday. “We want a safe country, and it starts with the borders, and that’s the way it is.”…
In a series of tweets and speeches on Monday, Mr. Trump instead relied on fear to curry support for a “zero tolerance” policy that refers for criminal prosecution all immigrants apprehended crossing the border without authorization. The president used the threat of gang violence and other crime, and a change in the fabric of American culture as a means to stoke support among supporters and push Congress into figuring out a way to drum up funding for his long-promised border wall.
We hate having to do this, but the Democrats passed a law requiring us to do it so we have no choice (never mind that we have total control of the government and could change that law — if it existed, which it doesn’t — easly and immediately).
We have to do this because those kids might be rapists and murderers! (because 4 year olds being ripped from their mother’s arms are obviously a dangerous threat to society and must be locked up).
Those aren’t even their real parents, they’re criminals who kidnapped them and brought them here so they could get into the country (because it’s not like the courts that hear their asylum case wouldn’t require some proof of parenthood, and the children would obviously be screaming in emotional pain when the police took them away from those horrible people who kidnapped them).
They’re just throwing shit at the wall at this point and hoping something sticks. Their arguments contradict one another, but his idiot followers won’t notice and wouldn’t care if they did. Welcome to Trumpworld.
