Donald Trump is nothing if not an absolutely shameless liar and hypocrite and he put both of those traits on display at the NATO summit before the gathered leaders even finished breakfast. There was also a healthy dose of psychological projection, accusing other countries of our own sins.
President Donald Trump accused Germany on Wednesday of being “totally controlled by Russia” and not meeting its obligations to the NATO alliance.
“Germany, as far I’m concerned, is captive to Russia,” Trump said…
“So we’re supposed to protect Germany, but they’re getting their energy from Russia. Explain that. And it can’t be explained,” he said.
So Germany is totally captive and controlled by Russia because they import natural gas from Russia and support a pipeline to make more natural gas available to European countries. So by that, uh, “reasoning,” The United States is totally captive and controlled by Canada and Mexico, from whom we import more oil than from anywhere else. And Trump supports the Keystone XL pipeline to bring even more oil from Canada to America. He might as well have screamed “I know you are, but what am I?”
And remember, it’s been Angela Merkel of Germany that has led the fight to contain Putin and Russian power in Eastern Europe, at the same time that Trump has been calling Putin a great guy and sucking up to him like a baby on a breast. The hypocrisy is staggering. He also lied about the sources of Germany’s energy production, and several other things.
TRUMP: “Germany is a captive of Russia because they supply (energy). They got rid of their coal plants. They got rid of their nuclear. They’re getting so much of the oil and gas from Russia. I think it’s something that NATO has to look at.”
THE FACTS: He’s wrong about coal-fired and nuclear energy and overstated Germany’s reliance on Russian natural gas. In 2017, Germany got more than one-third of its energy for electricity from coal and nearly 12 percent from nuclear plants. One-third came from renewable energy. Only 13 percent came from natural gas, with Russia as the major supplier.
Imagine the position the other NATO leaders are in here. They’ve got this ignorant bully with the world’s largest military and enormous power over them and he’s just plain lying about them. What can they do? Trump is still railing about the other countries not spending enough on defense, but we just made an agreement with them a few years ago to get to 2% of GDP from each country. Just another agreement that Trump doesn’t give a damn about. He just thinks he can say and do anything he wants, that there’s no need for quiet diplomacy or for showing even minimal respect for our closest allies. All while bootlicking our primary adversary on the world stage. It’s just perverse.
