Saying Goodbye to Julian Bond

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BondSQUARED.jpg

This weekend the nation and the world lost a giant, Julian Bond. He was one of the key leaders of the civil rights movement for the past 50+ years, having helped create the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and serving as the longtime president of the NAACP. He was also the first president of the Southern Poverty Law Center and a member of the Georgia legislature. The story of how he finally got a seat in that legislature demonstrates the power of racism in the 1960s. … [Read more...]

Fischer: Gays ‘Bringing Slavery Back to the South’

Screenshot from Youtube clip

Bryan Fischer has this bizarre idea that anti-discrimination laws impose slavery because they force someone to work for you. Of course, he's only ever said that about anti-discrimination laws that cover gay people. Apparently it only counts for gay people. … [Read more...]

KY Judge Orders Clerk to Issue Marriage Licenses to Same-Sex Couples

Kim Davis, the county clerk in Rowan County, Kentucky who refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, has lost the first round in court. Why Marriage Equality Matters, Example #573,489

Here's yet another example of why marriage equality in every state matters. A woman who moved from California to Texas is being denied a driver's license because she's in a same-sex marriage and changed her name to match her wife's. The state says they won't issue a license without a court order. … [Read more...]

DeVos Family Suddenly Doesn’t Like Homophobes

A group funded by the DeVos family is attacking far-right candidates in Michigan, including Gary Glenn of the American Family Association of Michigan, for being "vile homophobes." This from a family that has spent tens of millions of dollars supporting vile homophobes. … [Read more...]

Ruth Institute’s Worst Marriage Argument Yet

I've heard some staggeringly stupid arguments against marriage equality, but this one from the Ruth Institute (formerly affiliated with the National Organization for Marriage) takes the cake. In this post by Jennifer Johnson, they're actually claiming that allowing same-sex marriage is just like forbidding interracial marriage. They use this weird graphic: … [Read more...]

9 ‘Ex-gay’ Leaders Call for Ban on Reversion Therapy

Wow. This is absolutely huge. Nine former leaders of the "ex-gay" movement have signed a letter supporting a ban on gay reversion therapy, the twisted idea that one can magically become straight by praying hard enough. Here's the text of the letter: … [Read more...]

Staver: Gay Marriage ‘Beginning of the End of Western Civilization’

A few weeks ago, Mat Staver, the dumbest lawyer in America not named Larry Klayman, came to Michigan for the annual gathering of the American Decency Association. Naturally, he came armed with dystopic predictions of the terrible damage same-sex marriage will do to the world. … [Read more...]

Santorum’s Bad Arguments Against Marriage Equality

Rick Santorum continues to make terrible arguments against marriage equality, most recently in an interview with Phyllis Schlafly. Of course, all arguments against marriage equality are bad, but it's kind of impressive how they make arguments without even a hint of applying them consistently. … [Read more...]

Schlafly Still Thinks They’re Gonna Win on Marriage

One of the most amusing things to me is watching the Christian right try to convince themselves and others that they're not losing the fight on same-sex marriage. Phyllis Schlafly does so by citing polling data only of Republicans as if they represent everyone. … [Read more...]

Yet Another ‘Ex-Gay’ Leader Leaves It Behind

We've already seen several of the most prominent "ex-gay" leaders, including John Paulk and Alan Chambers, walk away from the movement and admit that they're still gay despite years of pretending otherwise. Now yet another prominent leader of that movement, Yvette Cantu Schneider, writes on the GLAAD website that she's still gay, just as she always was. … [Read more...]
