Ruth Institute’s Worst Marriage Argument Yet

I've heard some staggeringly stupid arguments against marriage equality, but this one from the Ruth Institute (formerly affiliated with the National Organization for Marriage) takes the cake. In this post by Jennifer Johnson, they're actually claiming that allowing same-sex marriage is just like forbidding interracial marriage. They use this weird graphic: … [Read more...]

9 ‘Ex-gay’ Leaders Call for Ban on Reversion Therapy

Wow. This is absolutely huge. Nine former leaders of the "ex-gay" movement have signed a letter supporting a ban on gay reversion therapy, the twisted idea that one can magically become straight by praying hard enough. Here's the text of the letter: … [Read more...]

Staver: Gay Marriage ‘Beginning of the End of Western Civilization’

A few weeks ago, Mat Staver, the dumbest lawyer in America not named Larry Klayman, came to Michigan for the annual gathering of the American Decency Association. Naturally, he came armed with dystopic predictions of the terrible damage same-sex marriage will do to the world. … [Read more...]

Santorum’s Bad Arguments Against Marriage Equality

Rick Santorum continues to make terrible arguments against marriage equality, most recently in an interview with Phyllis Schlafly. Of course, all arguments against marriage equality are bad, but it's kind of impressive how they make arguments without even a hint of applying them consistently. … [Read more...]

Schlafly Still Thinks They’re Gonna Win on Marriage

One of the most amusing things to me is watching the Christian right try to convince themselves and others that they're not losing the fight on same-sex marriage. Phyllis Schlafly does so by citing polling data only of Republicans as if they represent everyone. … [Read more...]

Yet Another ‘Ex-Gay’ Leader Leaves It Behind

We've already seen several of the most prominent "ex-gay" leaders, including John Paulk and Alan Chambers, walk away from the movement and admit that they're still gay despite years of pretending otherwise. Now yet another prominent leader of that movement, Yvette Cantu Schneider, writes on the GLAAD website that she's still gay, just as she always was. … [Read more...]

4th Circuit Upholds Overturning of VA’s Marriage Ban

The 4th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court ruling overturning Virginia's ban on same-sex marriage. It was a 2-1 ruling with two judges appointed by George W. Bush in the majority and one appointed by Ronald Reagan in dissent. The ruling applies to Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and North and South Carolina. From the majority opinion: … [Read more...]

Dreher: ‘Traditional Christianity’ All About Sex

Rod Dreher, a conservative whose views I typically respect and take seriously, wonders what we mean when we say that "traditional Christianity" is on its way from being a majority religion to a minority one in this country (as he agrees that it is). And he thinks it's all about sex. … [Read more...]

Morse Not Worried About History

Jennifer Roback Morse of the National Organization for Marriage-affiliated Ruth Institute was interviewed on a Christian radio show recently and was asked whether she was concerned about being judged by history as being on the side of bigotry and discrimination. She put on a brave face: … [Read more...]

Defending My Recent Reasonable Doubts Appearance

A couple weeks ago I was interviewed by my good friends who do the Reasonable Doubts podcast, just a few days after the Hobby Lobby ruling came down. I said then much the same thing that I said here, that I think it's a very bad ruling but not nearly as far-reaching as some have said it was. A couple of commenters on the RD blog seem to have been highly upset by my position and I'm going to answer their arguments here. Brooks Austin seems to be particularly agitated by what I said, saying I was … [Read more...]

A New Face for the ‘Ex-Gay’ Movement

Candace Chellew-Hodge writes at Religion Dispatches about David Kyle Foster, the new face of the "ex-gay" movement. They need a new face, of course, because so many of the old faces have abandoned that ruse and admitted to, or been caught, still being gay despite having sold the ex-gay con for decades. … [Read more...]

Florida Same-Sex Marriage Ban Overturned

Last week, a state judge in Florida overturned that state's ban on same-sex marriage and the reaction from the Christian right was exactly what you would expect. The judge's jurisdiction includes the Florida Keys, which seems entirely appropriate. … [Read more...]
