The Tea Party of Anti-Abortion Groups Forms

You may recall a huge blowup in Georgia a few months ago when Georgia Right to Life was thrown out of the National Right to Life Committee organization for refusing to support a bill that would ban abortion after 20 weeks. The state group refused to support it because it included exceptions for rape and incest. Now that group has formed a new national coalition to rival the NRLC: … [Read more...]

Crisis Pregnancy Centers Lie in England Too

It has long been documented that so-called Crisis Pregnancy Centers in the United State are really anti-abortion propaganda mills that lie to women to keep them from having an abortion. Turns out CPCs in the UK do the same thing and even seem to have invented a new lie: … [Read more...]

OH Rep Wants to Ban Insurance Coverage for Best Contraception

Proving once again that the real target of the anti-abortion folks is contraception and that their talk about the free market is bullshit, Ohio Republicans are trying to pass a bill that would prevent insurance companies from covering the most effective form of contraception. … [Read more...]

Oregon School to Hand Out Condoms

Here's a story I love. A school in Oregon has voted to allow teachers to hand out condoms to students starting in the 6th grade, in response to a rash of pregnancies over the last couple years. Good. Study after study shows that access to birth control reduces pregnancy. … [Read more...]

The Least Surprising Anti-Choice Move Ever

Over the last four years, anti-choice Republicans have passed more than 200 laws against reproductive rights at the state level. Most of those are in the form of TRAP (Targeted Regulation of Abortion Provider) laws, one of the common features of which is a requirement that any doctor performing abortions have admitting privileges at a local hospital. So what are they doing now? Protesting hospitals to get them to deny admitting privileges to those doctors, of course, as my friend Robin Marty … [Read more...]

In Which I Agree With Rick Santorum

Rick Santorum is on a book tour and during an appearance at an event at the University of Chicago he actually said something that I agree with. Instead of the contraception mandate in the Affordable Care Act, why not just make all birth control free? … [Read more...]

Wingnut on Wingnut Crime: Georgia Anti-Choice Groups

My friend Robin Marty has an article at Talking Points Memo about some serious infighting going on among the anti-choice groups in Georgia, pitting rabidly anti-abortion Republicans against even more rabid and extreme anti-abortion Republicans. And the shit's getting real. … [Read more...]

Republicans Really Should Stop Talking About Rape

Has there been a situation where a Republican politician has talked about rape and not ended up saying something incredibly heinous and damaging to them? Amanda Marcotte has an excellent recent example of a Missouri state senator showing some truly epic hypocrisy on the subject. … [Read more...]

Another Birth Control Myth Debunked

The Contraceptive Choice Project, a long-term research study by Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, is destroying a lot of commonly made Christian right claims about birth control. First it showed that offering free birth control to low-income women dramatically reduces abortion rates. Now it shows that free birth control does not increase risky sexual behavior. … [Read more...]

Attack of the Pro-Choice Gay People

A coalition of 50 LGBT and women's rights groups have issued a statement opposing legislation that allow Christian-owned businesses to ignore laws they don't like, including anti-discrimination laws. Naturally, the wingnuts are objecting to this unholy alliance: … [Read more...]

WND’s Dishonest Spin on Nun Lawsuit

The Worldnetdaily has its usual dishonest spin on the lawsuit filed by a group of nuns. And it's a "Worldnetdaily exclusive," which appears to mean nothing. Lots of other news outlets are writing about the same case. If it's an "exclusive" then so is every story. … [Read more...]

Notre Dame Denied Injunction on Contraception Mandate

The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court's refusal to grant a preliminary injunction in the University of Notre Dame's lawsuit challenging the ACA's contraception mandate. ND is arguing that even though they are exempt from having to include contraception in their group insurance policy, the act of having to claim that exemption is itself a violation of their religious freedom. The ruling, written by the legendary Judge Posner, almost mocks that argument: … [Read more...]
