medium_2225262197

Every year, at Drishtikone, we analyze the coming year for three nations - Indian, US, and Pakistan.  In my view, for our purposes, these three nations are very important.  One, because it is the Indian perspective that this blog shows while discussing and talking of Hinduism.  US, because it is the most important country in the world.  And Pakistan because it is the nation that had had and will have far reaching consequences for the region and the world. This year, I wanted to use this … [Read more...]

How Republicans (America’s “Poor man’s Pakistan Army”) can bring down American Democracy

medium_6779884645

Flexible and just systems and societies always have two types of social contract - Laws (that you have to abide by as per the letter) and Traditional Guidelines (that aren't set in letter but abided by in spirit).  Democracy is a system that needs both.  But more than the rigid written laws, it needs all the governing arms to understand and carry on the tradition of the spirit of the foundational social contract. Many a times, a democratic country gets corrupt and bad rulers.  Countries … [Read more...]

How did Boston Bombers get so heavily armed without background checks??

Two interesting pieces of information on the Boston Bombers have emerged. First is that none of the Bombers (younger was less than 21 years old anyway) had licenses to buy firearms.  Yet they had a large cache of arms to carry out many attacks!  And this comes right after the Senate has voted against improving the background checks. The Boston bombing suspects engaged in a deadly firefight with police last week, possessing six bombs, handguns, a rifle and more than 250 rounds of ammunition. … [Read more...]

Is the concern over US Debt paranoia and are we creating permanent unemployment?

To place a lot of importance to the debt that the US has accumulated is to ignore the other strengths from which the US comes to table with.  The impact of debt in case of US specifically is the sum total of its economic, military and political clout.  Fortunately for the US, and unfortunately for the world, debt is not the only thing that plays a role in the debt-dynamics between US and the world.  We saw that in the 1980s as well, when Dollar was the currency for Oil Trade despite an … [Read more...]

How the NRA conquered America’s gun debate

NRA is a powerful lobby and despite so many deaths and carnages around the country, a 300 year old culture of deviant and violent people is promoted as being the hallmark of the soul of the most developed nation in the world.  Just as the Islamists are busy taking over a billion people back to the 7th century; the NRA enthusiasts are taking this nation and its people to the Wild West of the 18th century.  Same difference.  But these Rip Van Winkles won't awaken. Here is what happened during … [Read more...]
