The Old New Creation

I had a dream last night that I was trying to get back in touch with an old friend. It's one of those goofy aspects of modern life that we technically ARE in touch in my real waking life, in that we're connected on facebook though we haven't seen each other in years and years, or had a real conversation in almost as long. But I kind of know what's going on with her, because, I "see" her.In my dream though, I was following her around trying to get her to talk to me while she went to work, and … [Read more...]

Quick Takes: Fights, Flies, and the Sleep of all Sleeps

1.My daughter is sitting on the couch eating a popsicle. She has bed head and her glasses on the end of her nose while she reads a book. She looks just a tiny bit like an old woman in her loud floral printed culottes (where did those come from?) and a shadow of dirt on the soles of her feet. She has cultivated a severely eclectic summer style of dressing, like the royal blue Justice shirt with an attached sequined vest that she bought with her own money at Goodwill. Her brothers have been … [Read more...]

How to Keep Your Friends Close and Your Enemies Closer

There's a little market in the town where we vacation that's hot and dirty, and there's never anyone at the cash register. They sell wine and lentils, and cold drinks, not much else, and if you ever plan to check out, you have to go hunting in the back kitchen where there are always a few sweaty women wearing tank tops and bandanas making pizzas. It's really good pizza, the kind where the crust is the centerpiece, and the toppings are a bonus. My husband ordered one while we were there, and … [Read more...]

Christmas in July

The four year old has been wearing red and white striped footy pajamas all day long, and now, it's almost bedtime, they're too filthy for sleep, and he wants to take one last stroll outside in the rain before he turns in. He get's his coat out of the closet, and says, "Mom, I need you to zip this. I don't want to go outside looking like this." "Like what?" "Like this!" It should be obvious what the problems is, but I'm flummoxed. Is it the pajamas, the coat-pajama … [Read more...]

Five Favorites

Well, it's been a long hard three-day week for me. I got caught in a flash flood with six kids and no cell phone, spent two hours sitting in a men's bathroom at a park waiting for reprieve which didn't come, finally wade-ran through a field filled with three feet of water to my home so I could drive a truck back to my chick-a-dees and get us all safe in dry clothes. In the days following, we've been carrying logs back and forth from the tree that fell down in the storm to the burn pile. In … [Read more...]

A Kindness

I hadn’t been to Adoration in a long time. Since we moved and have to drive long distances to get there, and since I have a lot of kids, I’ve let the habit slip. Last week, my mom had a couple of my kids in town, so I covered her Holy Hour with my two oldest and the baby.I knew the baby would be all over the place, but assumed we’d be the only ones in the Chapel, and it wouldn’t be a problem. I did not expect the problems to arise from my boys, who are old enough to know that it’s inappropr … [Read more...]

Quick Takes: Summertime and the Living is…Rather Awful

1.What a week.I sent a request to renew a subscription to a magazine, received an invoice and paid it. Little did I know, a Kenyan media racket had hacked into their system, and sent me a fake invoice. When the real invoice came, and I called the magazine to find out what was up, they said Yeah, these guys pop up under different guises all the time. We've filed with the attorney general, but they'll just disappear and show up again somewhere else. And now they had my check routing … [Read more...]
