The Exultation (sic) of the Holy Cross

The High Cross at Fatima, taken on the first stop of our 2012 Marian Pilgrimage

A year ago today I went on pilgrimage, through the grace of God and the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and my friend Michael. A year ago today I took the first steps of my own Way of the Cross, a journey ad Jesum per Mariam---to Jesus through Mary---that I am still only baby steps along. A year ago today I began to know what suffering, joy, death and resurrection really meant, in my own weak flesh. I am still learning, and I exult.I've always loved the story behind the Feast of the Exaltation of … [Read more...]

Our Left Foot: Downton Abbey & Anti-Catholic Snobbery

no popery

Not a few American Catholic fans of Downton Abbey were taken aback by a couple of scenes in last night's episode from Season 3. [Spoiler warning, if you're a DA follower who's behind on your dvr.] When Lady Sybil's widower---the Irishman Tom Branson, who was also once the family chauffeur---announces his intentions to have their newborn daughter baptized a Catholic, he triggers an explosion of protest from Lord Grantham. "A left-FOOTER?" Robert blurts at the breakfast table. In later scenes, … [Read more...]

Our Life, Our Sweetness and Our Hope: Egregious Twaddle on Pilgrimage

nd-front

Everybody else in Paris was lined up to see Lady Gaga. But we were gaga for another Lady.Pilgrimage 2012, Day 10: Lourdes to ParisWe left Lourdes early on a Sunday morning, bidding our bus drivers farewell and gathering at the Gare de Lourdes to catch the high-speed train to Paris. We were clustered in little groups throughout several train cars---our guides Guida and Francoise later confessed to putting some time into choosing who would be compatible with whom on the 5-hour … [Read more...]

Floating Martyrs, Desperate Housewives, and What Really Matters: Egregious Twaddle on Pilgrimage

DSCN3773

On the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, we venerated a miracle wrought by desperation, and experienced one of our own.Saturday, September 15: Lisbon to Fatima by way of SantaremLanding in Lisbon after our mad scramble through the 9 circles of Charles de Hell Airport yesterday, we met our guides Guida (her name means Guide, so she is Guida Our Guida) and Francoise and boarded our buses. We are a two-bus pilgrimage (the Red and the Blue; I'm on Blue, with Guida) with this many people. All we … [Read more...]

Hollowed Be Our Aim: Egregious Twaddle on Pilgrimage

yield

Prepare to Yield. That's what the sign flashed when we entered the departure lanes at Cincinnati/Northern KY International Airport yesterday (was that only yesterday?) afternoon. Other than Whan that Aprille with his shoures shoote, I can't think of a more apt start to a pilgrimage. That's what pilgrims are called to do, after all---to yield themselves to God's will and the vicissitudes of the road, to let the Spirit blow them where the Spirit wills, to break down those resistances of pride and … [Read more...]

The Dance of the Cross and the Crescent: Egregious Twaddle on Pilgrimage

crosscrescent

Our bags are . . . well, not actually packed yet, but close. We're . . . well, not exactly ready to go, but with a flurry of last minute chores (sync the iPad, stock up on protein bars, don't forget the European plug adapters) we'll be leaving on a jet plane tomorrow afternoon, after Mass at the Cathedral of St Peter in Chains in Cincinnati.Tomorrow, of course, is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, and there could hardly be a better day to set off on pilgrimage. It was as a … [Read more...]

‘Who Would True Valor See’: Egregious Twaddle Goes on Pilgrimage

lourdes

We're going on pilgrimage. You, me, the Archbishop of Cincinnati, and 80+ assorted pilgrims, hitting the road Friday for 10 days. We may be packing light, but we're carrying priceless cargo---our prayers and those of others who've asked our intercession, the burdens and fears and and hurts and losses we long to lay in the lap of the Mother of God, the weight of our heart's devotion. The Marian shrines of Portugal, Spain, and France are our destination, but we know that destinations do not a … [Read more...]

Stop Bashing Bishops! (Seriously)

Chess_bishop

I've got a bonnet full of bees today. Here's one.Which Catholic job would I least want to have? Head of the Vatican Bank? President of the LCWR? Negotiator with the SSPX? Butler to His Holiness? Nope. Any of those would be easy peasey lemon squeezee, compared to the Most Thankless Job in Christendom:Catholic Bishop.Any bishop, anywhere, any day. And I say that with full disclosure of my secret ambition, egged on by my friends Michael and Brian, to be named, against all odds and for … [Read more...]
