The Story of the Loser

And, behold, a certain politician stood up, and tempted us, saying, Voters, what shall I do to get a good Supreme Court Justice?

Christian voters said unto him, What is written in the Constitution? how readest thou more vitally the Word of God?

And the Politician answering said, Thou shalt love winning with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour should do likewise.

And the Voter said unto him, Thou hast answered virally: this do, and thou shalt win.

But the Voter, willing to justify himself, added a fig leaf and said to the Politician, And who is my neighbour?

And the Politician tweeted many tweets saying, “A certain man went down from New York to Washington, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his civil rights, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half lynched.

And by chance there came down a certain Preacher that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

And likewise a Christian college educator who talked of liberty, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side for there was an endowment to build.

But a certain Politician, mayhaps not unlike myself, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had anger with him for not helping himself,

And went to him, and looked at his wounds, being careful not to touch them, and used him as an example, and brought him up in a speech, and took care of him, making sure he was finished off.

And on the morrow when he had been elected, he took out two pence, and gave them to the man’s family, and said unto him, Be thankful; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will tax thee.

Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was the biggest winner over him that fell among the Washington thieves?”

And the Voter said, He that shewed him as an example of failure. Then said the Politician unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
