Wisdom From Kierkegaard

This Quote by Kierkegaard is rocking my world the last few weeks.

The matter is quite simple. The Bible is very easy to understand. But we as Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers. We pretend to be unable to understand it because we know very well that the minute we understand, we are obliged to act accordingly. Take any words in the New Testament and forget everything except pledging yourself to act accordingly. My God, you will say, if I do that my life will be ruined. How would I ever get on in the world? Herein lies the real place of Christian scholarship. Christian scholarship is the Church’s prodigious invention to defend itself against the Bible, to ensure that we can continue to be good Christians without the Bible coming too close. Oh, priceless scholarship, what would we do without you? Dreadful it is to fall into the hands of the living God. Yes, it is even dreadful to be alone with the New Testament.”

-Soren Kierkegaard

This dude could bring it!

I stumbled across this quote in Irresistible Revolution by Shane Claiborne a couple of days ago, posted it to my blog and social networks so I keep seeing it and it continues to blow my mind, too. As an M.Div. student at an academics-heavy school, I think the comments about scholarship are bang on in how we use that as an excuse to avoid actually following the instructions.

You mean like taking John 3:16 and beating non-believers over the head with it, while pretending not to understand the verse which immediately follows and acting accordingly? My hope comes from seeing that we all are emerging out of that old musty schoolroom.

Yes, this comes from Kierkegaard’s profound article titled “Kill the Commentators”. This article is a must read for anyone who has ever been frustrated with “modern scholarship”. I have his article on my Kierkegaard website located here if anyone is interested.

I went to your site but I could not read it. It is almost impossible to read the type against the gradient background. The font size is very small which can be adjusted by Ctrl+, but even making the font size larger doesn’t make it more legible. May I suggest that you make the background of the content area a solid white and your type black? That would really be a help.

I’m sorry to post this here, but there doesn’t seem to be anywhere on your site to send you an email.

Thanks for the note. The website is still a work in progress, but in the meantime I made the necessary adjustments.
