Westboro Baptist, Eye-gazing + #DemsInPhilly

Why would a Christian Yogi Mama head into Philadelphia amidst the crowds of Bernie or Bust supporters carrying her hand-made sign displaying-- We are already connected Look into my eyes and see Well, not to face down  the infamous, vemon-spewing  cult, Westboro Baptist, that's for certain. But when I found myself in 93 degree sweltering heat, it was nothing compared to the hellfire and damnation being shouted from the guy with the mic.  I had never seen or heard anything like this, let alon … [Read more...]

Die, Die, Die

Do you ever wake up so sad because the world is overrun with violence, grief + disbelief in the healing power of love? and your own pounding (occasionally violent) heart threatens to beat itself out of your chest...  I am led to pray over my friends and family. It's as if as I extend each blessing, I can already feel love  returning to me.  But then I have this feeling ARISE-- it is so unsettling, I am not me at all...I am other than myself. I do not fit in my old skin any … [Read more...]

Jesus Commanded I Tell You about Gluttony

Like a preacher in yoga pants I have come, a new Paul, to tell of your integrity in Christ, as a shared identity. But first you must put down your phone or laptop...Go ahead, trust me, she says with a mischievous grin.Back already? Great, now that I have your full attention!! Put it back down and put one hand on your belly and one hand on your heart. Close your eyes and fill up your belly like a big balloon, pause for a few seconds and then watch the belly descend as you slowly empty out … [Read more...]

Hey it’s Jesus in an Easter Dress Sitting in the Lotus, but You don’t Recognize Him

I cried on Easter Sunday...actually, Jesus my bridegroom wept because again He went unrecognized. It's a sad feeling deep in the heart, when a pastor doesn't recognize the risen One he is preaching about knowing so well. Not much has changed in over 2,000 years. It's Good Friday morning --coffee with an old friend chatting about God, yoga, healing, trauma, + racial tensions when over walks the pastor of a local church we used to attend. He had his back to us and I had not even seen him … [Read more...]

I walk the line

Verbally abused in an unwarranted and shocking attack in my home this week by someone 4 years under my employ , I attempt to process what and why this happened.  I nearly called the police in fear for my personal safety and pray for this person's well-being as I ask the resurrected ONE in my heart to reveal a path to peace in the midst of my hurt.  I look back and see the signs of months of resentment building.A few years ago, I would have guilted myself to forgive and find a way to r … [Read more...]

I am not you but I am not other than you, either

Taking my title one step further we read James Finley's words:"As this soaks into me, what are the implications of this in the way I act in the world, in relationships with other people?"Such is life.We travel across the ocean to see the eiffel tower's dazzling lights This very same afternoon as we strolled the belgian blocked, pedestrian-only streets, apple tarte tatin in hand we came upon a walking skeleton of a man. He didn't speak any English and put out his hand … [Read more...]

She was a friend of God

She was a friend of GODI’m just getting in from my friend of 33 years mother’s funeral. She’s being buried on her 91st birthday!! What a glorious and full life!! I wouldn't have missed the service for anything. Rita Law was a woman I always gravitated toward at family/friend gatherings. Her light was so bright, I was like a moth to her vibrant flame. Her last few years were marred by worsening dementia and yet one could always sense her inner radiance.Rita raised seven children— all pilla … [Read more...]

Sit with me in the I don’t know

Does the weight of the world lie  heavy on your  shoulders most days these past few weeks?  I wrote many drafts for this month's blog post on topics such asmy first experience at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in support of a friend celebrating 6 years sober how mindfulness practice can quickly ease the inner voice of resistance my inspiring experience at the Transform Network DC conference on urban transformation. But ultimately, I've decided that the timing isn't right to offer my … [Read more...]

It was the Best of Times…It was the Worst of Times

An ordinary Tuesday that began and ended in tears. But what happened in between is where the magic happens. It's 6:30 a.m. Making breakfasts and packing lunches for the teens. Telling myself to bring joy & gratitude to the activity-- totally faking it. Before I descend the basement steps for my daily meditation, I take a peek at the twitter feed and read "90 year old sisters still making each other laugh".  The thing about awareness-raising is that … [Read more...]

Once You are Real, You can’t be UGLY

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of … [Read more...]
