Eye Gazing in Prison on Holy Saturday

haunted_mirrors2

I spent Holy Saturday at the Philadelphia FDC 3South floor with 12 incarcerated women attending a 2-day Heart to Heart retreat. I was there to share the gift of yoga and meditation. The women really appreciate our visits and openly express their desire to learn. Our last exercise was an eye-gazing and I was partnered with Smoke, an African American woman of about 35. Smoke smiled a lot and agreed that she was willing to try it but admitted it made her nervous to stare into a stranger’s eyes f … [Read more...]

It was the Best of Times…It was the Worst of Times

An ordinary Tuesday that began and ended in tears. But what happened in between is where the magic happens. It's 6:30 a.m. Making breakfasts and packing lunches for the teens. Telling myself to bring joy & gratitude to the activity-- totally faking it. Before I descend the basement steps for my daily meditation, I take a peek at the twitter feed and read "90 year old sisters still making each other laugh".  The thing about awareness-raising is that … [Read more...]

Living Life on the Inhale

Breathing

So which one are you?An I N H A L E R or an E X H A L E RI am an inhaler. I often desire what is not meant for me. I did not always know this about myself. It's the journey of a lifetime to really and truly know yourself fully isn't it? I had plenty of negative words bouncing around in my head to describe being an INHALER.Self-absorbed Selfish Stingy/frugal/cheap EgotisticalThese are ugly, horrid words that no one in their right mind would readily admit to. But here I am … [Read more...]

Joy in Solemnity

'I have spoke with the tongue of angels I have held the hand of a devil' Wisdom from U2Yin/Yang Inhale/ Exhale Day/NightLast night my loving husband of 22 years spoke truth to my heart. And it hurt like HELL. But apparently was exactly what I needed to hear from the person who loves me most."I don't understand where this self-loathing comes from. You used to be so confident in your intelligence. I think for some reason, you don't feel worthy of how very smart you … [Read more...]

The Never Ending Story and Constant Conversion

image

“Conversion is a process, it is not a goal, not a product we consume. And it’s a bodily process, not only an emotional or intellectual one. The very cells in our body are busy changing, renewing themselves, every few days. Yet we remain recognizably ourselves. That is how conversion works, a paradox beautifully expressed in two vows that in two vows that are unique to Benedictine life. To join a monastic community, people promise stability, pledging to remain in that community for life. At the sa … [Read more...]

Let Us Conspire

images

What follows is in no way an affirmation of doing anything violent or illegal. In fact, quite the opposite. The following is a dictionary definition of the word “conspiracy” or “conspire”:To plan together secretly to commit an illegal or wrongful act or accomplish a legal purpose through illegal action. 1. To join or act together; combine. 2. To plan or plot secretly. The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition copyright ©2000 by Houghton Mifflin Comp … [Read more...]

God Stories

glory

God is active in every story, and as such, He is often the invisible Character. Part of being a follower of Christ is becoming more and more acutely aware that God is a part of every aspect of our lives. That God is moving, crafting us, showing us grace and mercy; that God is with us in joy and sorrows, in victories and defeats.  People may doubt the claims of the Gospel, but the one thing they can’t doubt and can’t deny is its affects on your life. That’s why your story is so important. Your st … [Read more...]

Keeping the “Cool” Out of Lent

mardi-gras-bourbon-streetjpg-cbd32fbb4151bf98

For those of us coming out of the conservative Evangelical background, the rediscovery of the Christian calendar has inspired many of us to participate in the sacred rhythm that the calendar affords. Two seasons in particular seem to show a resurgence: one being Advent, the other being Lent.As a kid growing up I had no idea what Mardi Gras (or Carnival) was all about. I would see the pictures on TV and wonder what would inspire such revelry? It seemed to always have an intensity that … [Read more...]

Learning How to Walk Again

learning-to-walk3

Learning to walk again… I have found this word picture to be a very helpful metaphor that creates in me an openness, a desire and a longing to embrace my personal spiritual recovery.  This metaphor is rooted in the Christ story, particularly in the second Adam image found in Romans 5.  By “second Adam”, I am referring to the Genesis narrative that tells the story of the original intention of God for humanity which was an intimate, seamless and a creative relationship with God.  This image also re … [Read more...]
