Texting vs. Flirting with a Monk

It's late and I would enjoy drifting off into dreamland but something in me feels unsettled, an inner agitation.  In the past, I would have allowed this to take root and my thoughts would encircle a 'problem'. But now I know I can go inside to escape turmoil, establishing peace. Somehow we've forgotten that mental calm and balance are our natural default state.Getting centered can be done with meditation or replacing negative thougths with positive ones like a mantra. Reminding ourselves-- I … [Read more...]

GRACE, a Name we can all Adopt

A store clerk looked at my credit card last week and asked, "What does your name mean, Anita? It is so beautiful". I responded that I once knew, but had forgotten… that I would google it.Apparently, my name means GRACE and I couldn't have been happier to learn or re-learn this little fact. I have always loved that word. While I was preparing for yoga with the ladies of the Phila. Federal Detention Center (FDC), I decided to research the meaning of many of their names:Donna- l … [Read more...]

Defiantly Love Your Neighbor

While many people have said what I’m about to say - I will say it again - there just aren’t words for what happened in #Orlando. There just isn’t a way to talk about it in a way that honors the depth and breadth of pain and sorrow that is encompassed by this tragedy. And so, I will lean into tradition, with something many people dismiss off hand as simplistic or trite, but I call us to:Defiantly Love Your NeighborAll the neighbors. The nice ones and the despicable ones. The peaceful on … [Read more...]

Die, Die, Die

Do you ever wake up so sad because the world is overrun with violence, grief + disbelief in the healing power of love? and your own pounding (occasionally violent) heart threatens to beat itself out of your chest...  I am led to pray over my friends and family. It's as if as I extend each blessing, I can already feel love  returning to me.  But then I have this feeling ARISE-- it is so unsettling, I am not me at all...I am other than myself. I do not fit in my old skin any … [Read more...]

Holy Collisions

Are you aware of  the peaceful revolution underway-- a new Pentecost is taking place in our yoga studios! But others mocking said, 'They are filled with new wine!" Acts 2:13 Ordinary humans, not just renunciates, are recognizing an alcohol buzz is a distant second to the natural high that comes with sparking internal connectivity-- the 'new wine' is a benefit of connection to our breath!  The desire for old ways merely disintegrates as the 'breath of the Almighty gives me life” (Job 33:4) … [Read more...]

The Lie of Separation

Back in May 2015 I was signed up for a weekend training in NYC with Phoenix Rising Yoga therapy. The day before I had the thought "I love learning new things; especially about yoga!" and suddenly a new deeper thought came in-- 'This isnt about learning dear. This is about healing." Woah!! What have I got to heal? Haven't I done enough deep work during the 8 months of yoga teacher training I completed in Novemebr? Such a silly girl-- there is ALWAYS more to heal.Upon arrival our very first … [Read more...]

I walk the line

Verbally abused in an unwarranted and shocking attack in my home this week by someone 4 years under my employ , I attempt to process what and why this happened.  I nearly called the police in fear for my personal safety and pray for this person's well-being as I ask the resurrected ONE in my heart to reveal a path to peace in the midst of my hurt.  I look back and see the signs of months of resentment building.A few years ago, I would have guilted myself to forgive and find a way to r … [Read more...]

I am not you but I am not other than you, either

Taking my title one step further we read James Finley's words:"As this soaks into me, what are the implications of this in the way I act in the world, in relationships with other people?"Such is life.We travel across the ocean to see the eiffel tower's dazzling lights This very same afternoon as we strolled the belgian blocked, pedestrian-only streets, apple tarte tatin in hand we came upon a walking skeleton of a man. He didn't speak any English and put out his hand … [Read more...]

Buddha Inside/Jesus Outside

Tonight Great Spirit said,' your story is ready to be birthed. Your peace has been lodged in the birth canal and is fading from lack of inspiration. Breathe forth!!!'Two years ago I dreamed of a paper with two paths drawn— one labeled ‘wounded healer’ and the other I could not decipher but knew it said the same thing. I lie in the French Broad River of North Carolina in early July and expose my palms announcing, pleading really, ‘Open my wounds to grace and reveal God’s glory!’. I really need … [Read more...]

She was a friend of God

She was a friend of GODI’m just getting in from my friend of 33 years mother’s funeral. She’s being buried on her 91st birthday!! What a glorious and full life!! I wouldn't have missed the service for anything. Rita Law was a woman I always gravitated toward at family/friend gatherings. Her light was so bright, I was like a moth to her vibrant flame. Her last few years were marred by worsening dementia and yet one could always sense her inner radiance.Rita raised seven children— all pilla … [Read more...]
