3 Things Folks Experiencing Homelessness Need from You

Three Things Our Friends Experiencing Homelessness Need from YouI spend my days working at one of Atlanta’s busiest homeless service agencies. I also get the pleasure of working with many missions teams, alternative spring breaks, and corporate service groups. I love my job, and I love building relationships with my friends experiencing homelessness.I have recently been asked by a lot of friends about what it is that our friends experiencing homelessness really need.So here are three … [Read more...]

The Lie of Separation

Back in May 2015 I was signed up for a weekend training in NYC with Phoenix Rising Yoga therapy. The day before I had the thought "I love learning new things; especially about yoga!" and suddenly a new deeper thought came in-- 'This isnt about learning dear. This is about healing." Woah!! What have I got to heal? Haven't I done enough deep work during the 8 months of yoga teacher training I completed in Novemebr? Such a silly girl-- there is ALWAYS more to heal.Upon arrival our very first … [Read more...]

I walk the line

Verbally abused in an unwarranted and shocking attack in my home this week by someone 4 years under my employ , I attempt to process what and why this happened.  I nearly called the police in fear for my personal safety and pray for this person's well-being as I ask the resurrected ONE in my heart to reveal a path to peace in the midst of my hurt.  I look back and see the signs of months of resentment building.A few years ago, I would have guilted myself to forgive and find a way to r … [Read more...]

Slave to Love

When did this happen?  She felt like an overcooked porkchop...Where was her essence, flavor or juiciness for life?  Curiosity dried up;  just a slave to lists, responsibilities and have to's.  When had she last danced a samba naked, wild  pulsating heart matching a sultry bassline?  Her heart restless and  bones dry, she desired passion and tenderness whether in the forest alone or beneath the covers with her lover. She had read in 1 corinthians 12:21 The eye cannot say to the hand, I don't … [Read more...]

I am not you but I am not other than you, either

Taking my title one step further we read James Finley's words:"As this soaks into me, what are the implications of this in the way I act in the world, in relationships with other people?"Such is life.We travel across the ocean to see the eiffel tower's dazzling lights This very same afternoon as we strolled the belgian blocked, pedestrian-only streets, apple tarte tatin in hand we came upon a walking skeleton of a man. He didn't speak any English and put out his hand … [Read more...]

She was a friend of God

She was a friend of GODI’m just getting in from my friend of 33 years mother’s funeral. She’s being buried on her 91st birthday!! What a glorious and full life!! I wouldn't have missed the service for anything. Rita Law was a woman I always gravitated toward at family/friend gatherings. Her light was so bright, I was like a moth to her vibrant flame. Her last few years were marred by worsening dementia and yet one could always sense her inner radiance.Rita raised seven children— all pilla … [Read more...]

Sit with me in the I don’t know

Does the weight of the world lie  heavy on your  shoulders most days these past few weeks?  I wrote many drafts for this month's blog post on topics such asmy first experience at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in support of a friend celebrating 6 years sober how mindfulness practice can quickly ease the inner voice of resistance my inspiring experience at the Transform Network DC conference on urban transformation. But ultimately, I've decided that the timing isn't right to offer my … [Read more...]

Sway- a poem for your March Day

Happy March. Here's a poem for you. SWAY I like talking in tongues, painting in acrylic, petting my dog in the warm sun of midday, serving the poor, being the hands and feet, and following that Jesus Way. I cuss some, and moonshine is alright,I sound like a sailor and I read my bible by the candlelight, Sometimes in the cool of day, you can find me on my front port-SWAY SWAY SWAYsitting in the swing, … [Read more...]

It was the Best of Times…It was the Worst of Times

An ordinary Tuesday that began and ended in tears. But what happened in between is where the magic happens. It's 6:30 a.m. Making breakfasts and packing lunches for the teens. Telling myself to bring joy & gratitude to the activity-- totally faking it. Before I descend the basement steps for my daily meditation, I take a peek at the twitter feed and read "90 year old sisters still making each other laugh".  The thing about awareness-raising is that … [Read more...]

Selma

50 years ago is a very short time.Fifty years ago there loomed a war over the mind's of Americans. In the south, preachers screamed vehemently and twisted the word of God to suggest that slavery and racism were God's truth.  Men and women found themselves beaten, raped, and tolerating all manners of abuse. Children walked down the street, and were gunned down just for being black.50 years ago is a very short time.Fifty years later, I think there is a war and an attack on the minds of … [Read more...]
