What time is it?

clock

What time is it? Good question. One of the side effects of my cerebral palsy is that I have trouble telling distances apart. One example of this is clocks with analog faces. The short hand is the hour. The long hand is…count by five…the minutes. But when I look at it, I can never tell. Fortunately for us, the time is now. The time is now to show up in opposition to anti-blackness, to the murder of black men, women and children. Black lives matter. Here's a question I get: "But, Theresa, don’t al … [Read more...]

Life Without Eternity (The End of Metaphysics Series)

Ludwig Wittgenstein once said that, "...there is something wrong with trying to answer metaphysical questions with the language we use."We live our lives in hope of some sort of after life. We are told that before we were born that we were 'knit together' in our mother's womb. That there is some guiding supreme being who encompasses all meaning and all power. That somewhere beneath the earth or on it, is the essence of evil. Now, for many these claims are at the center of their … [Read more...]

Did Jesus Struggle With Racism?

For centuries now, the divinity of Jesus Christ has been under fire. Whether this man from Nazareth was actually God, or was it all just a literary plot to perpetuate one of the largest world religions today, these are the questions that are currently being asked across many platforms today. Honestly, I think it's the wrong issue to be focused on. Whether Jesus was divine or not, or fully-divine, or fully-human, or whether you can have coffee without caffeine or not, these questions, at the e … [Read more...]

Give Me a Racist Over A Racist System Anyday by Randy Woodley

"Now brother Woodley, Rev. _______ will share his apology with you and then you can apologize to him." These are last words I needed to hear to understand the jist of  "platform reconciliation" about twelve years ago. "Why in hell would I want to apologize?," I asked myself. I then left the event and vowed never to enable this type of trite confession offering cheap reconciliation again. Over the years the movement has become more sophisticated but the core is still sick, missing key components … [Read more...]

Return to a Theology of Normalcy or the Same Old Homogenous Imperialism? By Randy S. Woodley

It is coming….the signs of restored racism in our society are beginning to show… Increased hate crimes, record gun sales, White Male Supremacy is definitely on the rebound! It was precipitated by the organized resistance to the first Black President, (think Tea Party and the hijacking of the Republican led House). The Tea Party and their corporate donors have mastered the redistricting game and are now working on gerrymandering on a state level. They intend to win again and "they" mostly rep … [Read more...]

Emergents Need to Embrace Anti-Oppression with Inclusivity and Humility

:: By Holly Roach, re-posted by permission from Emerging Santa Fe:If Wild Goose West is any indication, the Emergent movement is looking more and more like a gathering of the proverbial tribes right now. For more than ten years this movement has been emerging, but now it looks more like a converging of cultures. While we acknowledge and understand the history that (post) Evangelicals founded this movement, we are now in a time where new people and cultures are coming into the … [Read more...]

Is Violent Racism Making a Comeback or Has it Ever Gone Away? by Randy Woodley

hate_graph

Many White people thought we had racism almost licked in America. We would all at the least, like to believe racism has become more subtle than it was in former days. I don’t see it.  It was shameful to hear how the entire stock of “Trayvon Martin Targets” sold out in just two days. The targets did not have Trayvon's face but were of a young man in a hoodie holding Skittles and an Arizona Ice Tea. The target was on the heart, where Trayvon was shot. What is especially frightening about this is im … [Read more...]

Racism and the Fear of the Other

images-1

Woops! It surfaced again. Most of the country was shocked to hear the news of an interracial couple being kicked out of the all White, Freewill Baptist Church in Pikeville Kentucky last week. Sure, we were a bit surprised but after all, it is “rural Kentucky” and wasn’t the word “Baptist” used? Easily dismissed as a anomaly, we store the occurrence in the “you know you’re a redneck when” file of our brain and move on but please…Not so fast…What about October 2009 when a Justice of the Peace i … [Read more...]
