The Witch’s Guide to Wands (A Book Review)

I am honored that I was asked to review The Witch’s Guide to Wands by Gypsey Elaine Teague. True to titling, this book is a comprehensive guide to absolutely anything a person would ever want to know about making a wand. There is a recurring story wound through the book about a wand merchant that is a delightful lead-in to this informative and helpful guide.

All aspects of wand use and creation are covered with detailed attention paid to each individual wood and metal one might consider for wand making. All aspects means not only does the reader find a wealth of information on the direct affiliations of each material, but also colloquial and folk stories and legends regarding each one.

Not only useful as a valuable research and reference tool, this book is well framed up and quite enjoyable to read. The author’s writing voice is consistent and strong, as well as engaging. From Scott Cunningham to J. K. Rowling to Robert Bradbury, the author aptly demonstrates a well-read and informed knowledge of the subject and is adept at translating instruction to the reader in a manner that is easily absorbed.

It could be tempting for an author to shortchange such a specific subject or worse, pad it with extraneous information that is clearly filling. Fortunately, Ms. Teague does neither and delivers a useful guide that I would go so far to say is a vital addition to the well stocked Pagan library.
