From the Beloved Attracts the Lover

We race hotly after the lover,

but when the lover comes, we are absent.

You’re a lover of God, but He is such

that when He comes, there isn’t a drop

of you remaining, for with His look,

a hundred like you will wither away.

You’re like a shadow in love with the sun.

When the intensity of light appears, you vanish.

Chasing yourself away.

by Jalal id-din Rumi
from The Illustrated Rumi:
A Treasury of Wisdom from the Poet of the Soul

translated by Philip Dunn, Manuela Dunn Mascetti, and R. A. Nicholson.

We love that we exist.

Yet, we have no existence without the Sun

that creates us and breathes life into our forms.

We yearn to be One with the Force that gives us Life.

Yet, when we merge with the Light, we do not exist.

There can be no shadow when there is only One Light.

The fear of disappearing keeps us in separation.

The only true existence is in

the Essence of the One.
