British-born journalist and atheist writer Christopher Hitchens has passed away in Houston, Texas from a long illness with throat cancer.

See the ABC News video and article here and the obituary in Vanity Fair.

Any death is sad, more so when a man dedicates so much of his life to heaping scorn and mockery on the one person, Jesus Christ, who could have brought hope, peace, and victory over death for Hitchens.

Fuck off. Do not use the death of this brilliant man to spread your lies. I thought Jesus taught you not to be selfish?

So sad you still believe in your magic man in the sky. I hope you realise the truth one day and stop wasting your energy on nonsense. Far better to spend your time helping your fellows than indulging in self-serving delusions of grandeur.

wow, cheap shot. congratulations on your cowardly parting shot at one of the most enigmatic and brilliant men of his age.

As a Christian who disagreed with most of Christopher Hitchens ideology and arguments, I find your brief brush off on his death unworthy of the man and of Christ.

Apparently his legacy lives on…please learn something about what others believe before attacking it. An education can be dangerous though, so be careful.

I’ve yet to meet anyone who believes in a “magic man in the sky.” I’ve yet to meet a Christian who believes that God lives anywhere in the universe, or that he performs magic or most of the other nonsense atheists spew out with regularity.

    Atheists make the best trollers!

“…the one person…” How do you know He didn’t?

To several commenters: I’m not going to defend Mike Bird, not least because he attacks Hitchens for the wrong reasons, but to defend Hitchens as brilliant is just, I dunno, deifying a polemical journalist (nothing wrong with that but little he wrote count as intellectually brilliant) and sided with some complete arseholes (let’s not forget his defence of the Suharto supporting Wolfowitz)…well…come on.

How ironic. Hitch writes a book about Mother Theresa after her death, criticizing not only her work but her motives!
Michael Bird makes a statement about Hitchen’s worldview, and you atheists have a hissy fit! You seem to thin skinned to be a true disciple of Hitchens.

    Joseph,
It is always tough when we lose one of our heroes. Sometimes we are not as objective when others comment on them. Hitchens did use the death of another man to further his career as a writer, did he not? He lifted the banner against Jesus and went on tours to debate Christians. He profited from these dialogues and I for one am thankful for his courage and honesty. In the end I couldn’t follow him…but he spoke so much truth about some in my camp that I had to accept it. I am saddened by his death and hope that others who disagreed with him will be gracious.

VM, it seems to me this was just a short note and comment, with perhaps more reflection to come in the days ahead … “brief brush off”? A bit like saying a quick notice in the news that Kim Jong-Il died, with a summary thought, is brushing off the history of Korea …
