Eric Metaxas and the Australia Media Frenzy

Eric Metaxas and the Australia Media Frenzy April 30, 2016

American author and speaker Eric Metaxas has been in Australia talking on the topic of “courage,” and his speaking events have been protested by pro- LGBT activists. I know, I was at one event last night, which didn’t get out of hand thankfully, but it is kind of intimidating walking into a church with 50+ angry people with placards chanting at you.

Concurrently, Australia’s top political and cultural talk show called Q&A had a special episode about Christianity in Australia. During the episode Daniel Comensoli asked Lyle Shelton (head of the Australian Christian Lobby who invited Metaxas to Australia): “You and Treasurer Scott Morrison have defended the Eric Metaxas’ right to speak at the ACL’s national conference, despite previous comments comparing the rise of Nazi Germany to the rise in homosexuality. Do you personally think these comments are acceptable in a tolerant society such as ours, and are similar comments what we have to look forward to in an upcoming plebiscite debate on same-sex marriage?”

Below is what Lyle Shelton said in response:

And you can also see Eric Metaxas’ response below:

What freaks me out is the use of the word “tolerant” in the question. Tolerance used to mean, you and I have the right to disagree on religion, politics, and sport, while still treating each other in a civil manner. But now tolerance means that you must not say anything that offends social progressives, and if you do, you should be silenced. To me, that is not “tolerance,” that is the very definition of “censorship.”
