Melinda Selmys’s Terrific Series on NFP

Just really important for people who care about this stuff. Also adds some complexity to Wesley Hill's (quite good) post about Christian sexual ethics and "dazzling the pagan eye"--there's a lot of suffering, confusion, loss, anger, and frustration that comes with Christian sexual discipline (even if you don't accept e.g. the Catholic teaching on contraception). That can be dazzling in its own way--e.g. you might see our solidarity in different forms of suffering, or in the way we wrestle … [Read more...]

A Few Gay Marriage Links I Like (And One Straight Link About Gay Marriage)

You can hear echoes of these posts in my Lava thing--several of us working similar veins. EDITED! MORE LINKS BELOW!Melinda Selmys, "Five Ways We Can Save Marriage Now":Yesterday I said that we need to move forward with building up the infrastructure to make traditional marriage into a realistic and attractive possibility. Today, I’m going to talk about some very practical things that we can start doing to help make this a reality. In First Things’ Symposium on the SCOTUS decision, Mat … [Read more...]

“Gay and Catholic” Book Extras: A Tiny Post About Marriage and Priesthood

These are topics I left out of the book partly because I wanted to focus on all the less-visible vocations available to lgbt/same-sex attracted Christians--and partly because I just don't have very much to say here. Never let it be said that I let that stop me! And ETA wow, this got longer than it should have. So, not so tiny after all....Gay/queer/ssa people do get married, to members of the opposite sex, in ways which don't fit the stereotype of the terrified closet case or self-deceived … [Read more...]

Videos on Homosexuality and Chastity in the Catholic Church

I'm in this: What you’ll find here are videos by a group of faithful gay Catholics who believe in the Church’s teachings about marriage and sexuality. We’ll talk about what that teaching is and why we’ve embraced it, the spiritual riches that we’ve found within the Church, the obstacles and misunderstandings that we’ve faced, and the ways that Catholics can help to support gay people who seek the Lord with good will. more--requires you to create an account, but no payment or anything like that. … [Read more...]

Yet More Gay Catholic Whatnot

Enough is never enough of Gay Catholic Stuff. Anyway here's a bunch of the Usual Suspects talking about various topics, for an upcoming website. I don't remember anything I said in these videos so uh... enjoy! (In all seriousness, it's an interesting group of people with large areas of overlap but also divergent life experiences and vocations, so I think the video series is bound to be interesting no matter what weird mishegoss I ended up saying.) … [Read more...]

Lots of Really Great Stuff at Spiritual Friendship Now

including: Melinda Selmys on the Cross as gift. This post manages to take a discourse I usually find kind of impenetrable--the argument about whether and how "homosexuality" (STILL NOT A THEOLOGICAL CATEGORY) is a gift--and make it into something truly sublime. I still resist looking at "homosexuality" (is this a thing?) as a "cross" full-stop, but that's really not the point of her post, which you all should read.Jeremy Erickson has some powerful reflections on what he experienced as a … [Read more...]

The Further Adventures of Melinda Selmys

I have many friends who loved Melinda Selmys's 2009 book, Sexual Authenticity: An Intimate Reflection on Homosexuality and Catholicism, in which she explored the philosophical issues arising from her own shift from lesbian atheist to married Catholic mom. It did not work for me at all. I admit that I am probably overly-harsh on Gay Catholic Whatnot. I wrote my own book--forthcoming Fall 2014 from Ave Maria Press, GET EXCITED--because nobody else had yet written the book I wanted to read. But I … [Read more...]
