(Mostly Dis)honest (S)crap Meme

Having (thankfully!) never been tagged with the “Honest Scrapmeme that has been circulating, I began formulating a somewhat twisted alternative. The meme works as follows. You post five things about yourself. Four are untrue. One is true. All are so outlandish, implausible or ridiculous that no one would be inclined to believe that any of them are true. And despite the pleas from your readers, you never divulge which is true and which are fabrications. You then tag five other people (four seriously and one person you are pretty sure would never participate).

Here are mine:

(1) When I am not teaching summer classes, I often spend time in Hollywood working as a stunt double for Paul Giamatti.

(2) Although my wife agreed to marry me, she refused to be seen with me in public on dates until I had a PhD.

(3) 9 out of 10 people who hear my voice on the phone for the first time address me as “ma’am”.

(4) I leave work early with the excuse that I’m going to pick up my son from school, while really I’m rushing home to watch Days of our Lives.

(5) I am NT Wrong.

I tag Doug Chaplin, Doug Mangum, Scott Bailey, Ken Schenck, and NT Wrong (unless that’s me, in which case I’ve already done it).

Simply diabolical: 4 wrong answers and 1 "Wrong" answer?

You're either a very good liar or ALL of these are true. You can save yourself from the shame of my conclusion by telling us the right answer. ;-)

It has to be #2…that's too specific to be completely made up! ;-)

  • steph

It must be 2. That would just be too sad to be true.

I would pick #2; it has the requisite number of weasel words. Note the "in public on dates" bit. Not "in public", not "go on a date with me", but the combination of both statements. Not to mention that putting something off "until [someone] has [their] PhD" can be an attempt to get someone to finish their revisions so that they can finally submit their dissertation

Since when did Giamatti ever do anything that required a stunt double?D

I would have to say #3 is true.I have heard you on youtube :)

well you and I can't both be NT Wrong, so I'm going for number 4 being the true one – no one else has chosen that one!

2 and 3 both seem reasonably plausible. (I get 3 pretty regularly). But 2 is so much more fun I'm just going to go with 2.

Well, I can't seem to make a link here, but I have responded to your challenge.
