Geocities Is Closing

Geocities Is Closing October 20, 2009

Those who have materials on Geocities will already have received e-mails about the fact that the site will be closing in about a week’s time. Others who have found useful things there from time to time, however, may not be aware of this. If there is something on there that you have found useful, now might be a good time to save a copy.

If you are interested in saving your own materials from Geocities, here’s the easiest way to do so. Download a free trial of MetaProducts Offline Explorer (you may well decide it is worth buying once you’ve discovered what it can do). Set it to go to your Geocities page and download only pages, images and other content from that site and your directory. One more setting is crucially important for this: set a delay (I used 30 seconds, just to be safe) in between pages. Otherwise, you’ll find that a number of your pages are not what you expected, but pages warning that you’ve exceeded a limit of visits/speed.

I’ve done as I suggested above, and moved the content to my butler web page. You can find my old Geocities stuff at this address: http://blue.butler.edu/~jfmcgrat/geocities/

Old class notes and syllabi from before I came to Butler, as well as resources in Romanian that I or students made when I taught in Romania, are the main things to be found there. I honestly haven’t looked at it for ages, and so perhaps someone who finds something interesting or useful there can let me know – and those who notice content that is completely useless and out of date will do me a huge favor if they let me know that, too!
