A cartoon from ASBO Jesus:
Love it! One error though: it is not a great book filled with wisdom. That would imply that we actually have to follow some of the ethical teachings of Jesus or the voice of justice of the prophets, which, as we all know, is completely absurd! It is the great book of Science and history! Or perhaps the Great book of inerrant facts concerning everything in the known universe!
2 timothy 3:16. of course it is meaningless, since it is in the bible. so what have you got that’s better than the bible, for wisdom?
Is the point of the Bible to focus attention on itself? Do you think that its authors would be pleased or disappointed to find that their words were being treated as though they were the appropriate place to focus attention, rather than on God and none other?
“Do you think that its authors would be pleased or disappointed to find that their words were being treated as though they were the appropriate place to focus attention, rather than on God and none other?”
Yes, the authors would be greatly disappointed to find their words as the *only* appropriate place to focus attention. God should be paid attention to. I think most of the conservatives here take you as being apart of a “create your own god” movement. Which, if you’re a Protestant, is true. As for me, I’ll go with the Ecumenical creeds as a guideline for interpreting scripture so I don’t have to fight against any one. Instead, others can fight against the creeds and they were put together by the best scholars, theologians, and philosophers in their days.
2 Timothy 3:16 – All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
Probably first refers to the Old Testament however Paul’s letters were also considered scripture as well. Refers to this as inspired by God but might have a translation issue. Might actually say “all scripture inspired by God”.
What exactly constitutes as inspired by God? This is the weakest argument for sola scriptura that I’ve ever seen.
For many conservatives, there is an extra entity in the God-head. Its Father, Son, Holy Spirit and the Holy Bible. The point of the Bible is to lead us to God, not to function as a substitute for Him.
Are you suggesting that Eastern Orthodox and Catholics are liberals?
No, The ‘point’of the Bible is to reveal Gods will to us. It is one of the (2) two ways that God is made known. The other is through General Revelation.
Via Gods Word we are made aware of Jesus, and the ‘point’ of Jesus is to lead us to God. Jesus is the ONLY way to God.
