Classics Opening at Butler University

Assistant Professor, Tenure Track, Ph.D. in Classical Studies, starting August 14, 2013. Three courses per semester. We seek a generalist with expertise in Greek language, literature, and culture. The successful candidate will have an interest in further developing and expanding a small Classical Studies Program. Funds are available for developing a summer civilization course in Greece. There is some opportunity to teach Greek on all levels, but the emphasis is on culture and literature courses in translation. The position may require the occasional teaching of Latin at the introductory or intermediate level. Contribution to Butler’s Core Curriculum is essential, including such courses as Ancient Greek Perspectives and Greek Art and Myth.  The successful candidate will be able to contribute to other programs such as Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies, Philosophy, Religion, Art, History, or English, or have an interest in developing and implementing curricula that addresses multicultural issues.  An active research agenda is required.

Application materials, including letter of application, vita, (unofficial) transcript, three letters of reference, and evidence of teaching excellence, should be mailed to Classics Search, Jordan Hall 202, Butler University, 4600 Sunset Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46208. Electronic submissions to classics@butler.edu are welcome. For inquiries, contact this email address or phone (317) 940-9974. Submission deadline: November 1, 2012. Candidates who applied earlier this year for a visiting position in Classics may request re-activation of their file and send an updated vita.

Interviewing will take place at the AIA/APA meeting in Seattle.
