Format Changes

Readers of the blog who are not reading the blog via a feed have noticed some formatting changes. I am not sure whether there is any change of format to the RSS feed – if there is, please let me know! For everyone else, I don’t think that there should be any practical difference, other than that it might involve clicking the “read more” or the title of the post to continue reading, rather than just the scroll bar on the right hand side. But I don’t think that that will mean more clicking, and so my blog should not be contributing to anyone having additional finger pains or other negative consequences of the Patheos format changes.

The only slightly significant difference is the elimination of the tag cloud. You can still find things by tag on the blog, but I suppose some might wish to be able to see a visual representation of what I blog about most frequently, and whether Doctor Who, the Bible, Jesus, mythicism, or something else has center stage.

What do you make of the format changes? Do let me know if there is anything you strongly like or dislike – Patheos has generally been open to constructive criticism and feedback in the past, so do let me know how you feel about the changes!

Your new blog format is misbehaving! I’ve tried this in both Google Chrome and Explorer, and the same thing happens consistently.

When I first go to your site, I scroll down past the last post and click on “Previous Posts”.

The same list of posts now appears, except that now, each post is followed by little icons for facebook, tweet, email, etc, and a little information line showing “filed under: biblioblogging, tagged with:” etc.

At the bottom of this new rendition of the page, in place of “Previous Posts”, you get “1, 2, 3 . . . 544 Next Page >>”.

You can click on any of these choices – 1,2,3, 544 or Next Page – they all lead to the same page:

a post from November 29, 2010 titled: “2 Thessalonians is so Pseudepigraphal, He’s Gotta Wear Shades!”

    Strange blog behavior alert!

Thanks – I’ll let them know immediately.

I had forgotten about that post, so it is cool to be reminded of it. But I don’t want it to be the only post anyone can reach on my blog!!! :-)

Yeah, it looked like an interesting post; so I bookmarked it to read later (guessing that Patheos will have fixed the problem by the time I come back).

A few changes on the scroll bar that I don’t think are for the better: there’s no more list of your most recent posts, and “Interesting Posts Elsewhere” (which I’ve found to be a nice resource) is about 1/4 as long as it used to be.

    • http://www.patheos.com/blogs/exploringourmatrix/ James F. McGrath

Thanks – I’ve restored the Interesting Posts Elsewhere list to what I think was its original length, and have included the Recent Posts list but lower down, since it largely but not entirely duplicates the posts that you can see on the blog’s home page. But I agree that it is still useful to have it there. Let me know what you think now, if it isn’t too much trouble! Thanks!

It looks good, thanks! Having the Recent Posts list makes it easier to jump between a handful of posts with interesting discussions going on in the comments after being away for a few hours or days.

In Chrome I see a double set of (for lack of a better term) “social networking icons”. I’m sure there is supposed to be one row of facebook, twitter, reddit, etc., but I see a row of half icons (the top half), and another row of half icons (again the top half!).
Then after the post (just below “you may also like…”) there is another set of buttons for the same purpose – these are rendered correctly.

Hi Trevor! I also use Chrome, and I don’t see a second set of buttons at the top. There are buttons at the top and bottom just for the convenience of anyone who might want to share a post, but I don’t see the third one. I would suggest clearing your browser cache, and then if it is still there, let me know and I will tell Patheos that someone is seeing something strange. Thanks for letting me know!

OK, I tried tinkering with some settings, and even found a compatibility fix relating to duplication. How does it look now? (Again, keep in mind that you may need to make sure that the pages are refreshed and not displaying elements that may be cached).

          • TrevorN

Alas no, I had deleted my cache “since the beginning of time” :-( and just did so again, but there’s no difference.
When I display this page, I see the content with no icons, then the content scrolls down about 20 lines and I see TWO blocks of underlined text links (“share to google+”, “share to twitter”, etc), then the content scrolls back and leaves the two rows of icons.
I can see that there is a script running in the page which inserts the icons although I can’t see how it does it. But for some reason it’s doing it twice!
It’s not going to drive me away from your blog and in the grand scheme of things it’s nothing much at all. So don’t waste precious time on it (unless you’re as much of a pedant and perfectionist as I am!)

            • James F. McGrath

I suspect that I am! :-) I will see if anyone at Patheos has any tips, since it does not have that effect on my own computer, suggesting that it is not merely a matter of how I myself set things. I’ll bring in the pros and see what they can do!

              • TrevorN

Just for completeness, Chrome and Firefox both display doubles, IE9 does not.
