Choose Your Own Adventure Textbooks in Moodle!

Those who’ve read my blog for a long time or followed some of the projects I’ve undertaken will know that I have a longstanding interest in using technology to create genuinely interactive teaching tools. You can see a prototype of a “Choose Your Own Adventure” textbook I created a number of years ago, by going to this address:

Well, it seems as though Moodle has seen the usefulness of this approach. They have integrated all that you need to make a Choose Your Own Adventure textbook/course. Here’s a tutorial explaining how it is done, courtesy of the Center for Online Learning:

I think you mean “Choose your own path” or “gamebook” perhaps. The other one is trademarked and fairly strongly enforced.

Reminds me of a Simpson’s Halloween episode from a while back.

      “…the shinning.”
      “Don’t you mean the shining?”
“Shhhh! Do you want to get sued?!”

Great idea! I’d love to try putting some the arguments for the existence of God into a Choose Your Own Adventure format.

(Though unless students can sneakily keep their finger in the page for when they go wrong, is it really recreating the original atmosphere of the books?!)

With Moodle (or other technological means of doing this), you can have other means of navigating, and so you can quite easily jump back to your last decision point, for instance, and explore a different path.
