Opposing Mix-It-Up Day: Bigotry and Isolationism in Jesus’ Name

The New York Times has reported that the organization that calls itself the “American Family Association” is opposing Mix It Up Day – a day during which children are (get ready for it) encouraged to sit with someone that they would not normally, outside of their comfort zone.

American Family Association, and anyone who keeps their children home from school at their advice, I am talking to you:

The Jesus you claim to follow ate with tax collectors and sinners. He went to spend time among the Samaritans. He touched, and allowed himself to be touched by, the unclean and marginalized. He encouraged women to learn at a time when that was controversial. He broke down boundaries, and his earliest followers followed in his footsteps and went even further down the path of eliminating distinctions between slave and free, Jew and Greek and other ethnicities, rich and poor, male and female – specifically working to accomplish this by bringing them together at meals.

If you oppose having your children sit next to someone they don’t normally, someone who is different from them, the values you are standing for are not Christian but anti-Christian. And by your actions, you are not only instilling anti-Christian values in your own children, but giving a bad impression about Christianity to everyone who hears about what you are doing.

To those who actually understand who Jesus was and actually seek to follow him, I think the best thing that we can do is to (1) speak out about this, and (2) promote Mix-It-Up Day. I’ll be mentioning it to everyone I know who works in education – I hope that you’ll do the same!

From the AFA Web site – another view of this issue:

Schools respond to ‘Mix It Up’ day, SPLC exposed

    October 3, 2012

    The
homosexual activist group, Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), has been
called to task by public school administrators across the nation for
falsely listing schools as participants in “Mix It Up” day without
    authorization or permission.

    “Mix It Up” day is
an entry-level “diversity” program designed specifically by SPCL to
establish the acceptance of homosexuality into public schools, including
    elementary and junior high schools.

    Many school
administrators were offended to learn that their school was listed as a
“participating” school on the SPLC website and ordered it removed
immediately. In some cases, students or teachers independently signed
the school up without approval, leaving principals and superintendents
unprepared for phone calls from concerned parents.

It seems to me Bob Slater is offering the same hateful view that Mix It Up day is trying to combat. Associating this type of bigotry with Jesus makes me very angry.

I love the characterization of the SPLC as “The homosexual activist group, Southern Poverty Law Center”.
You can feel the hate and disdain in the very phrasing of the entire release.

I find it very troubling that the very people that should be following the spirit of “mix it up day” in their daily lives, at least according to the precepts of their religion and the writings of their founders and spiritual inspirations, are those that not only try to combat it every step of the way, but feel free to lie to accomplish their goal.

What happened to “love the sinner hate the sin”? It’s clear that it has been all along “hate both the sinner and the sin”.

For all the christians that are always complaining about being mischaracterized, this is a perfect chance to set the record straight.
What I see so far is not very encouraging.

So if the AFA does not promote acceptance of homosexuality/diversity, than how do they suggest we treat this group? Ignore them I guess? We need to wrestle decent religion/conservatism back from extremist groups like these. Tolerance of those different from yourself is not the same as “promoting homosexuality”. AFA has lied and broken a fundamental commandment of a religion that they claim to believe. Wonderful article James!

Read what you wrote again after you replace “homosexual” with “black” or “hispanic”. Then you’ll see exactly what kind of a shitbag bigot you are. Or maybe not.

While I essentially agree with what you are saying; if you can’t say it without name-calling and swearing, then you’re really no better than they are.

I wonder if this means that the SPLC folks will be encouraging their supporters to sit with AFA folks.

Excellent post, James. A lot of Christians need to be reminded about who Jesus really was and what he stood for — inclusion and forgiveness — which are very healing for all peoples.
Maybe Republicans should sit down with Democrats, and vice versa…

I think they sense they are losing this battle and it is driving them mad. At least they are becoming crazier and crazier.

It’s probably a good idea not to talk to Samaritans either. Or women. And especially not women who are Samaritans. Just to be safe we should stay away from wells too.

The AFA makes me want to vomit.
