Kurt Atterberg in Memoriam

On this day in 1974, Kurt Atterberg, one of my favorite composers, passed away. Since I recently shared his “Sinfonia Funebra” which might be more appropriate to the occasion, I’m sharing his Symphony No.8 which I have not shared previously.

Excellent accompaniment to my office work today.

    James,
Excellent symphony: it’s got plenty of melodies and drive, among other things. Many symphonies (especially modern) lack those and are more like piles of sound in slow motion.
Do you know any other symphonies by modern composers which have these characteristics?

A number come to mind. Definitely listen to Atterberg’s other symphonies, especially #2,3, and 7. Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s only symphony, in F# Major, is a gem. Wilhelm Peterson-Berger, Atterberg’s fellow countryman, has written some beautiful symphonies. And then perhaps give Enescu a try. If you listen to any of them, let me know what you think – and I have more reecommendations where those came from!

    This is lovely, thank you.
