The Tao of Coffee

Someone on Facebook shared this quote attributed to Bruce Lee…

Be like water …Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.

I liked the sentiment, which is very Taoist. But I added in a comment something that I think is also important:

You put coffee in a coffeemaker, it becomes coffee!

And that reminded me of this image which has also been making the rounds on Facebook:

Now that’s coffee with some punch! Here’s a tidbit I rarely share, especially in public. But I was a student of Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do fighting style, mixing it with Shorin-ji Kempo, way back in the summer of 1973. I had just burned the calories with an intense workout and fell to the mat to meditate. In my head, I heard Bruce’s voice say, “I would have spread Christianity throughout the world.” I knew he was agnostic so I thought it was strange. Then heard the news, Lee had died hours before. One for Believe It or Not? ;-)

    “Be water, my friend”.
Why do I immediately think “Stay thirsty, my friend”?
The Dos Equis man is a true prophet, and I am a follower of his karma, beer. This is the secret teaching of the Gnostics, to get to a higher level of knowledge.
