Religion and Science Fiction Syllabus

Several people have asked for a copy of the reading list for my class on religion and science fiction, and so I am making a copy of the syllabus available here.

I have also added a link to a plainer version of it on the page I created some years ago for the course, even though I do not have time to maintain that site any longer.

That’s an excellent reading list. I wish I was the right age, and in the right hemisphere, to attend the course.

I note that you don’t give the author’s name for “The Nine Billon Names Of God”. Is that an oversight, or do you feel that anyone who doesn’t know it has no business being on the course?

It was an oversight. If I were taking the latter approach, I could have just given the topics and said “You know which stories are most important – and can I just assume you’ve already read them?” :-)

There are some great choices, and I love the inclusion of Chariot of the Gods. But for me, when I think religion and science fiction, I immediately think of Babylon 5.

Hello James, I certainly like this topic.

I’m writing such a novel with SF and theology and have written you an email to explain it in more detail.
I hope this could please some people, many philosophical and theological questions are raised during the course of the Thriller.

I don’t know if I will be able to publish it, I hope on it.

Looks like fun. Lots of good stuff there.

However as another option for ythose who can’t get there, like me as well. Here’s my program for a small SF con I chair.

There are lots of good SF cons, look for one in your area.

Jack McDevitt as guest of honor! Excellent! Thanks for sharing that!

You’re welcome. Jack was a wonderful guest! We enjoyed him a lot. I had some great conversations with him over the weekend and from and back to the airport. He has a new “Hutch” novel out soon and is just finishing a new “Benedict” one.
