History and the Bible on Reddit

Today there will be an AMA session on ancient Jewish and Christian history, including but not limited to matters that intersect with the Bible, on the AskHistorians subreddit. I will be participating. Hope you’ll pay a visit!

    Hey, that was pretty interesting.

I’ve always been kinda interested in the development of the YWHW cult from its polytheistic origins through to Rabbinical Judaism (although not sufficiently interested to overcome my laziness (and, to be fair, one only has a finite amount of free time and energy)), so I prick up my ears whenever it gets mentioned. In the last couple of years I’ve been interested to discover that the Israelite religion was nowhere near as uniform as it’s easy to imagine it was.

So it was interesting to read about the different attitudes towards the Temple in Jerusalem.

I was going to ask about Karaite judaism, but my velleity was insufficient to overcome the fact I either don’t have a reddit account or I’ve forgotten the password…
