“Just a Theory”

Jerry Coyne shared the above video, which features professor Tim White addressing with what a creationist student probably thought was a clever objection.

This is what happens when the plot of “God’s not Dead” happens in the real world.

The student’s question is “why should we base the validity of all our life’s beliefs on a theory?” after prefacing this with some doubts about whether cells are really simple building blocks.

‘All our life’s beliefs’ sounds like it goes further than paleontology class. I think she might be conflating ‘evolution’ with ‘thoroughgoing godless scientific materialism/naturalism’.

And the business about simple building blocks sounds like the worry here is abiogenesis. Abiogenesis is a lot more speculative than the rest of evolutionary biology, but it’s not a keystone without which the entire structure falls apart. And one could even argue that it’s not really a part of evolutionary biology per se.

I don’t want to criticise White too much as it’s not as if the student is being clear about this, and it’s difficult to answer poorly-phrased and left-field questions well on the fly, but it seems to me that, at best, he’s only addressing half her concerns here.
