In The Beginning

This song by My Brightest Diamond caught my eye and ear on the album All Things Will Unwind. I heard the singer, Shara Worden, perform as the soloist on Gorecki’s Symphony of Sorrowful Songs with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra last weekend. It was a fantastic concert, also including Szymanowski’s Violin Concerto No.1 and Kilar’s Krzesany. [Read more...]

Better in 7/8 Time

Many things are better in 7/8 time. Here’s “Sleigh Ride”: And here’s “Good King Wenceslas”: The latter video I’ve shared before – the arrangement and fiddle playing are by Alex de Pue, brother of Zach de Pue, who is the concertmaster of the Indianapolist Symphony Orchestra, as well as a member of Time for Three. Venzago Returns!

I was delighted to get to hear the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra perform tonight, although dismayed that I had to leave at intermission. My son wasn’t feeling well, probably as a result of Halloween partying and candy consumption. But the first half was, fortunately, the part that I was most excited about. I love music of [Read More...]

Metropolitan Youth Orchestra Play-a-Thon

I am privileged not only to have my son benefit from the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra program of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, but also to get to play the role of accompanist myself sometimes, as I did in this year’s Play-a-Thon (as evidenced in the video above – sorry it starts a few seconds into the first piece, [Read More...]

Korngold’s Violin Concerto

In the process of moving my blog to Patheos, a number of embedded videos were lost. And so there is apparently now no post on this blog which features one of my favorite pieces of music, Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s violin concerto. And so here it is, performed by Hilary Hahn, who will be coming to [Read More...]

Orawa (Wojciech Kilar)

On Friday evening, I had the privilege of attending a concert by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra string musicians, led by Zach de Pue. It was wonderful. My favorite pieces of the evening were an excerpt from the score for the film Solaris, and the piece in the video above, Orawa by Wojciech Kilar. [Read more...]

Schelomo

I had the privilege of attending a concert at the Hilbert Circle Theater tonight. It featured cellist Zuill Bailey as soloist on Ernest Bloch's Schelomo and Nico Muhly's new Cello Concerto, together with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. They also performed Camille Saint-Saens' Symphony No.3, the “Organ Symphony.” It was wonderful! I had heard Schelomo several [Read More...]

Good King Wenceslas (Alex De Pue Arrangement)

Anyone who has gone to this year’s Yuletide Celebration at the Hilbert Circle Theater in Indianapolis will have heard this arrangement of the classic carol by Alex De Pue, not with hammered dulcimer, but rather orchestrated for and performed by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra with the violin solo part played by Alex’s brother, the ISO [Read More...]
