The World is About to Turn

Recently, I heard a story. A friend’s father ran into the superintendent of our local school system and struck up a conversation. She mentioned that they, like many other cities and counties on the East coast, had closed schools in anticipation of Hurricane Sandy. Fortunately there wasn’t much damage where we live. Unfortunately, the decision [...]

The Need For Action on Gun Violence

Periodically Faithful Democrats will post message memos put together by Message Matters.  Below is today’s special edition memo on gun violence. In the wake of the elementary school massacre, ordinary Americans are demanding action oncommon-sense gun laws – like a strong new ban on the assault weapon and high-capacity magazinesthat killed these kids — while GOP Members of Congress dodge the issue. Here’s how to shut [...]

Lament for the Massacred Innocents

Contrary to what James Carney said, now is precisely the time to begin a conversation on gun violence because only the presence of our shared grief can prevent the conversation from turning in to the vitriolic debates he rightly believes would dishonor the Sandy Hook victims.

For Dreamers

Nearly a month ago I wrote, “We put our foot down against the hateful and discriminatory sound bites about immigrants and their children.” And yet, they keep on coming. In a recent article by Ann Coulter, insensitively titled “America Nears El Tipping Pointo,” she writes, “I apologize to America’s young people, whose dashed dreams and [...]

Putting our Collective Foot Down

Whew, it’s over! We’ve had about a week to regroup… the partisan bickering on social media sites has lessened (though not disappeared), and most American’s are moving forward with their normal, day to day lives. Another peaceful vote has come and gone. Analysis of the election, beginning before the winner was even called, has been [...]

Politicians Ignore The Working Poor At Their Peril

Democrats have been convinced they should not make any mention of the poor–instead focusing exclusively on the middle class…but recent nationwide survey showed that, when framed correctly, voters across the socioeconomic and political spectrum respond much more favorably to politicians who talk about the working poor. And perhaps more importantly, this new messaging trumps the best Republican arguments for cutting funding to government programs that help lower income Americans. This messaging approach is not about using words to cover the truth, but instead ensuring the words we use better communicate the truth.

Faith and Democratic Party Politics, an Interview I Gave…

I like telling the story of people of faith in the Democratic Party… their strength and resolve, through their faith in God, to be servants, caring for and fighting for the American people.

Why Romney Lost & How Dems Keep Winning: Part 2

Democrats should feel encourage and validated by the election. President Obama’s campaign did a very effective strategic job with their turnout effort, and voters clearly responded to our values and priorities. The fact that Democrats will enter next Congress with a net gain in the Senate (considering the number of seats Democrats were defending and [...]

Why Romney Lost, & How Dems Can Keep Winning: Part 1

Obama won because Republican values are just anathema to most Americans. But he also won because voters knew Obama understood them and would put them first…they trusted him to figure out the best course forward for our country and do what was right for their families. Here’s why:

What Does Last Night Mean?

At a loss for how to talk about President Obama’s re-election?  Here are some talking points put together by Message Matters on the statement our country made last night.  When our FD writers shared about why they were voting for President Obama, these were many of the same reasons they gave.  Share your thoughts in [...]
