Why Romney Lost, & How Dems Can Keep Winning: Part 1

Obama won because Republican values are just anathema to most Americans. But he also won because voters knew Obama understood them and would put them first…they trusted him to figure out the best course forward for our country and do what was right for their families. Here’s why: [Read more...]

Romney Takes Stand on Abortion (and another, and another, and…)

Like Charlie Brown and Lucy, many conservative Christians think that Romney will finally be the Republican President who doesn’t pull the abortion football away once he gets their vote. So let’s take a look at the strong and definitive positions Romney has taken on this issue that so many Americans are passionate about. [Read more...]

Does God Want Obama to Win?

If you’re Romney right now, you’ve got to be cursing your luck. You’re in a neck-and-neck race the week before the election…and then wham: another “Act of God” throws all your plans out the window. It’s almost enough to let you empathize with those “takers” (as your running mate would call them) who lost everything in this storm…almost. [Read more...]

Buttprints in the Sand: Christians & The Role of Government

I adapted the more famous version of this poem for a sermon a few years back, and it seemed like a good (and hopefully fun) anchor for a post on the role of Church and Government and factors Christians should weigh when voting and picking political sides: One night I had a wondrous dream Two [Read More...]

The 51%

Last week at the University of Virginia, the Virginia Center for the Study of Religion held a religion and politics panel, “Religion and the Presidential Election.” From the Left, we had Burns Strider visiting from Washington DC. Burns is the founder and principal of Eleison LLC, the nation’s leading consulting firm committed to finding and [Read More...]

Jesus Doesn’t Care or Why Liberals Need Christ

without Jesus this progressive narrative can become self-defeating because it perpetuates the argument that we should judge people based on the value of their work and not their value as the image of Christ. An appeal to fairness is a good argument to make in a pluralistic or secular setting. It’s a good standard for determining public policy, and it’ll win elections. But for Christians it can be the be-all-and-end-all. [Read more...]

Why Big Bird Matters

Romney wanted to show he wasn’t heartless–that he was one of us and understood kids–by saying he loved Big Bird. But the fact that he made that statement at the same time that he said he planned to cut all funding to PBS and the programs that allow Big Bird to exist communicated the complete opposite. in an effort to show he was human, he’s smiled as he’s said he’d end Big Bird. And it matters because Romney’s biggest liability is that he can’t relate. Voters don’t trust him or believe he will care about them. [Read more...]

Damning Video Contrasts Romney’s Comments to Funders vs Pastors

If a picture is worth a thousand words, this video is worth even more.  The video by Message Matters and American Values Network contrasts Romney’s statement to faith leaders about the poor and importance of maintaining a government safetynet vs his now infamous statements to rich donors about how he really feels.   Nothing I can say is more damning than [Read More...]

Romney Doesn’t Care About Half of America—The GOP Half!

The group he is dismissing is mostly Republican! The top 10 states with the highest percentage of the population not paying income taxes are the reddest states in the country…Furthermore, the people he’s dismissing are not statistics or problems or worthless. They are God’s children, our neighbors. They matter and have worth…Romney’s similarity to the Wizard of Oz’s Tin Man is more than just in affect and movement. He has no heart. [Read more...]
