The New Romcom ‘Jewtopia’ Appears to Have One or Two Actual Jews In It

There's a new romantic comedy coming out called Jewtopia. As far as I can tell from the trailer, it's about two best friends, one who is Jewish and marries a Jewish woman and one who's not Jewish but desperate to marry a Jewish woman so that "he never has to make decisions again" (charming). Jamie-Lynn Sigler (who is actually Jewish) and Jennifer Love Hewitt (who is not) play the respective female leads. I didn't laugh once during the trailer, but I'll consider putting it on my Netflix list if … [Read more...]

Religion Is at the Forefront in Diablo Cody’s New Movie ‘Paradise’

In Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody's directorial debut, Paradise, a young woman (Julianne Hough) finds herself questioning and challenging her Christian faith after she gets in a plane accident. The woman's name is Lamb, in case you didn't think there was enough religious symbolism going on here. The movie costars Octavia Spencer, Russell Brand, Holly Hunter, and Nick freaking Offerman, so, yeah, I'll watch it. … [Read more...]

‘Trishna’ Is a Hindu Retelling of ‘Tess of the D’Urbervilles’

Indian actress Freida Pinto stars in Trishna, a modern retelling of Tess of the D'Urbervilles set against the Hindu caste system. I'm a big Thomas Hardy fan, and I think the trailer looks compelling. It's out in theaters on July 13 and will begin airing on the IFC channel the following week. … [Read more...]

After a failed attempt at a gospel career under her real name, Katy reinvented herself as the candy-loving boob-flaunting superstar she is today. She says that the first … [Read more...]

What do President Barack Obama and Hugh Hefner have in common? Apparently, they both really wanted to see the new movie Martha Marcy May Marlene, where Elizabeth Olsen plays a young woman who has escaped from an abusive cult. Hefner hosted a screening of the movie at the Playboy Mansion, while Obama requested a print of the film to watch at the White House. The movie has been generating positive buzz and is catapulting Olsen (the sister of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen) into stardom.  … [Read more...]
