I’m Pretty Sure Eleanor Friedberger’s New Video Was Inspired By Chick Tracts

Apparently I'm on some kind of music kick or something this week? I don't know. Either way, Eleanor Friedberger (she's one half of The Fiery Furnaces and the heroine of Franz Ferdinand's "Eleanor Put Your Boots On") has a new single out called "Heaven," and it's good. And the video features some illustrations that look exactly like Chick Tracts. For those of you who didn't grow up in the Bible Belt, Chick Tracts are these little flip book comics about how if you don't accept Jesus as your … [Read more...]

MIA’s New Video Features Religious-Inspired Costumes

This morning, after watching the new Madonna video that features MIA, I decided to watch MIA's new video for "Bad Girls." Full disclosure: I am a pretty big MIA fan, and I like the way that she manages to meld pop music and political statements without going too far into cloying/preachy territory. But, that said, I did have a few eyebrow-raising moments during "Bad Girls," which is set in the Middle East.At the beginning of the video, MIA is wearing an Arab-style head and face scarf, … [Read more...]

Madonna Sports Cross In New Video, World Yawns

Madonna is performing at the Super Bowl this weekend (I only know the date of this event because I keep tabs on the Puppy Bowl), so it seemed like a perfect time to release her new single, "Gimme All Your Luvin.'" The video includes lots of football imagery and includes backup vocals/cameos from two much more relevant musicians, Nicki Minaj and MIA. … [Read more...]

Listen Up: Craig Finn’s ‘New Friend Jesus’

Craig Finn, frontman of The Hold Steady, has a new solo album called Clear Heart Full Eyes. While I'm basically on board with anything containing a Friday Night Lights shoutout, the album is also beautiful in its own right. My current favorite track is "New Friend Jesus," which contains the standout lyrics "It's hard to suck with Jesus in your band" and "People say we suck at sports/but they don't understand/it's hard to catch with holes right through your hands."You can check out the full … [Read more...]

Some People On Twitter Think Beyonce and Jay-Z’s Baby Is a Satanist

Yesterday, superstars Beyonce and Jay-Z welcomed their first child, a girl they named Blue Ivy Carter (Carter is Jay-Z's real last name). While I was more preoccupied with wondering whether Blue Ivy sounded more like a rare plant or a porn star, apparently a bunch of Christians on Twitter thought that the name was clearly a reference to Satanism. When the baby's name was first reported, several outlets misidentified her as Ivy Blue. That prompted a Twitter topic to emerge. Says Charisse … [Read more...]

Here Is a Christian Parody of Nicki Minaj’s ‘Super Bass’

It's nothing new for religious folks to take pop culture and put their own Jesus-approved spin on it, especially if the original version of the song/show/product contains profanity or has a sexual message. The next thing to get the Christian-remake treatment is Nicki Minaj's hit song "Super Bass," which has become "Super Grace." Check it: … [Read more...]

L. Ron Hubbard’s Great-Grandson Directed a Music Video

Jamie DeWolf, great-grandson of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard (that's LRH to you!) is a poet based in San Francisco. He just directed his first music video for fellow San Franciscan Forrest Day. If you're looking for Xenu symbolism in this video, don't bother - DeWolf's family is out of Scientology, and DeWolf has made many public statements denouncing his great-grandfather and calling the Church "a pyramid scheme." I guess this means he won't be hired to direct the next Beck video, huh? … [Read more...]
