Does God Use Dreams to Speak to Christians Today?

Can God guide a Christian's decision through dreams?

Does God use dreams to speak to Christians today? Many years ago, I would have immediately replied with a vehement and emphatic “No!” My fervor for protecting the place of Scripture as God’s revelation of Himself demanded it. Or so I thought. Now, I’m not so sure that dreams have no place alongside my continued insistence on the rightful place of Scripture as “the only rule to direct how we may glorify and enjoy Him.” As I read Scripture, I see God using dreams to guide His people, not just … [Read more...]

What Does the Bible Teach about Drinking Alcohol?

VArious drnks

This is a guest post from my friend, Dr. P. Andrew Sandlin, President of the Center for Cultural Leadership. This post is a response to a friend of his who asked the question, "What does the Bible teach about drinking alcohol?" I thought there might be others who struggle with this question on their faith walk. You can purchase his latest book here: Christian Culture: An Introduction.  Follow his blog here. Hello Andrew.  I know you’re not running an advice column, but I was hoping you could hel … [Read more...]

Drones and Rand Paul’s Filibuster: A Lesson from Exodus

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

The Biblical book of Exodus may not be the first place you'd think to find wisdom for harnessing modern technology, but I think Rand Paul's filibuster over drone use finds some support there. This week, Senator Rand Paul (KY-R) initiated a talking filibuster -- a rare event in these days of virtual filibusters -- to protest what he sees as the Obama Administration's lack of a transparent policy regarding when drones may be used to kill American citizens without due process of law as … [Read more...]

How to Focus on God Each and Every Morning

At a recent Bible study I attended, one man shared that he really struggled to get focused on God on Saturday mornings when his family schedule is so different that day. As a father of six, I could relate to that. Maybe you can, too.But Saturday isn't the only day it can be tough. Each and every morning brings its own challenges. As Jesus said, "Sufficient for the day is its own trouble." (Matthew 6:34) So how can you quickly and easily get your heart where it needs to be before work and … [Read more...]

The Angel of the Lord Appeared, Armed with a Smoking AR-15

OK. Work with me here.As I was studying Scripture in preparation for a few posts on the hot topic of gun control, I began to come across quite a few verses that depicted the angel of the Lord as being armed and dangerous. My basic thinking was that, of course, guns do not appear in the Bible. So there will be no proof-texting for either side. But weapons certainly do appear. Often. And often in the hands of angels. No, not those Angels. Maybe we'll get back to the 1980s later. Cultural … [Read more...]

How to Stop Being Afraid

For my Patheos friends, this post kicks off a series over the next few weeks as we unpack the following steps from Psalm 46 in more detail to discover God's wisdom on how to stop being afraid.  Enjoy! Smack dab in the middle between real life and real faith is -- real fear.  Fear of failure. Fear that we'll look foolish. Fear that everyone will laugh when we do. Fear that __________ -- fill in the blank with your own fear. There's no shortage of them.I believe that for those who have trusted in … [Read more...]

Colorado Evil: A Father’s Reluctant Response to Gun Control

Evil exists. It reappeared in a violent and horrific way last week in a Colorado movie theater. I've tried to stay out of the ensuing debate placing blame in all directions. As the father of six, including one son on the verge of his sixth birthday, the tragedy just hit too close to home. It's a horrible thing that's been done, rightly prompting much prayer and sympathy in our own household and, I hope, in yours. Be sure to read this post by a woman of faith who survived in the theater that … [Read more...]
