God, Gun Control, and the Gospel: Where Is Our Hope?

balance

I'm a big fan of guns. Anyone who follows along here regularly at FaithWalkers knows that. I think guns play a vital role in securing our liberty to worship God freely in the United States. But I'm a fan of laws, as well. And I think that guns can do a lot of harm when used improperly. So I see both the value of laws to provide boundaries on our freedoms to own guns, and I see the value of owning guns to protect those freedoms. In this ongoing gun control debate in our society, my conce … [Read more...]

The Angel of the Lord Appeared, Armed with a Smoking AR-15

OK. Work with me here.As I was studying Scripture in preparation for a few posts on the hot topic of gun control, I began to come across quite a few verses that depicted the angel of the Lord as being armed and dangerous. My basic thinking was that, of course, guns do not appear in the Bible. So there will be no proof-texting for either side. But weapons certainly do appear. Often. And often in the hands of angels. No, not those Angels. Maybe we'll get back to the 1980s later. Cultural … [Read more...]

Rush Limbaugh: “You know how to stop abortion? Require that each one occur with a gun.”

I didn't say it. Rush did. That's Rush Limbaugh for those on the left coast. You know how to stop abortion? Require that each one occur with a gun. ~ Rush Limbaugh, show archive, Jan. 16, 2013 I know some of you, even some of my friends here on the Evangelical portal here at Patheos won't like me saying it -- but Rush is right on this one. Lost amid all the clamor about gun control efforts to supposedly protect children is the fact that we brutally kill thousands of children every day via … [Read more...]

America’s Founders on Gun Control and the Evil at Sandy Hook

The following post appears courtesy of my friends at Wallbuilders, founded by David Barton. Wallbuilders is an organization dedicated to presenting America's forgotten history and heroes, with an emphasis on the moral, religious, and constitutional foundation on which America was built. In the wake of the heart-rending massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, a cry has arisen for gun control. But such calls are misdirected. The lessons of Scriptures and history are clear that the key is … [Read more...]

Why Joe Biden is Wrong on Gun Control

Vice President used this wrong thinking yesterday to justify why new gun control action should be taken by the federal government: "If our actions result in saving only one life, they're worth taking," Biden said at a meeting of victims and gun control proponents at the White House. "But I'm convinced we can affect the well-being of millions of Americans and take thousands of people out of harm's way if we act responsibly." With all due respect, Mr. Vice President, (and I'm scraping the bottom … [Read more...]

Colorado Evil: A Father’s Reluctant Response to Gun Control

Evil exists. It reappeared in a violent and horrific way last week in a Colorado movie theater. I've tried to stay out of the ensuing debate placing blame in all directions. As the father of six, including one son on the verge of his sixth birthday, the tragedy just hit too close to home. It's a horrible thing that's been done, rightly prompting much prayer and sympathy in our own household and, I hope, in yours. Be sure to read this post by a woman of faith who survived in the theater that … [Read more...]
