So Why Did God Answer My Prayer? The Story of a Circle Maker

Circle-Maker

It was far in the sameness of the woods. I've always wanted to write that line from one of Robert Frost's more mysterious poems "The Demiurge's Laugh." Now seemed like a good time as I reflect on the question of why did God answer my prayer to sell our house -- and how He did it. I suppose I could call it "The Story of a Circle Maker." Last September  we decided to move to Atlanta, Georgia, because we thought it would best positions us to answer God's call on my life. … [Read more...]

A Psalm for Kermit Gosnell

I've steered clear of commenting on the horrific trial of abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell. I've known about the story for some time, but just couldn't bring myself to focus on the horrors in which he was engaged. Much has been made of the lack of media coverage. My friends here at Patheos Evangelical have done much to change that. Rightly so. For those not familiar with the case, I point you here, somewhat reluctantly, because the crimes he allegedly committed against helpless infants is … [Read more...]

Boston Marathon Bombing: Prayers and Reminders

boston-marathon-bomb-300x168

I just woke up in Guam. And there is blood on the screen. Again. 3 dead now. One child. At least 12 dozen more injured physically. Thousands more scarred for life in even more substantial ways. God have mercy.   Having just arrived in Guam for mission work late last night, I had been unplugged from news for the last 24 hours. I awoke this morning (Guam time) to hear of the horrific bombings in and around the Boston Marathon a few hours ago. For those needing to get up to … [Read more...]

A Simple Prayer for Humble Boldness

prayer

This simple post is not the length of what you usually find here at FaithWalkers.  I had another post planned for today, but instead, I'll simply share my own earnest prayer that I jotted in my journal this morning. Not even sure why I'm sharing it, except that I feel urged to do so. Maybe it will be of help to someone. Maybe I'm the one who needs to share it. I've been reading through Exodus of late, paying particular attention to the detailed instructions God gave about preparing the … [Read more...]

How to Focus on God Each and Every Morning

At a recent Bible study I attended, one man shared that he really struggled to get focused on God on Saturday mornings when his family schedule is so different that day. As a father of six, I could relate to that. Maybe you can, too. But Saturday isn't the only day it can be tough. Each and every morning brings its own challenges. As Jesus said, "Sufficient for the day is its own trouble." (Matthew 6:34) So how can you quickly and easily get your heart where it needs to be before work … [Read more...]

How Going to Sleep Earlier Can Transform your Morning Prayer Time

I confess. I slept in today. Of course, it is Saturday, so I don't feel all that bad. Recently, I had some back pain that was just annoying enough to keep me from falling asleep. Combine that with the usual stuff that can tempt all of us to keep thinking every night long after we should have stopped -- and each of us can easily find ourselves waking up long after we should have been spending focused time in prayer. Aargh! Er -- I meant, Amen. I'm sure you've had one of those … [Read more...]

Prayer: How to Get the Greatest Return on Your Investment

If you had invested in gold a decade ago -- and some of you did -- you'd be pretty happy with the return on that investment. It may even have given you the greatest return of any investment you've ever made. So far. And that's too bad. Every day we turn down an investment with a guaranteed rate of return beyond our wildest imaginations -- with a value far greater than gold. We turn down the opportunity to put God to work through the power of prayer. When we say that prayer puts God to work, it … [Read more...]

Just How Great Is Our God?

How many times have you sung that simple song, "How Great is Our God"? Yet how many times have you invested time in prayer for a specific request and quickly added provisions, excuses, and qualifications to protect that "great" God from the embarrassment of not answering? It's as if we're unwilling to really let go of our prayer. I know I've done it. Recently, we have been praying that our house would sell. So far, nothing. I can feel my grip tightening. My list of excuses growing. All too … [Read more...]
