Help! I Need Somebody!

It's not a word I like to use often. Maybe you're different. It seems some people are.  They use it all the time. The dreaded word?Help.Or better yet -- Help! I need somebody! The last few weeks brought me to a place where just about all I could do was cry, "Help!" I thought about crying, "Uncle!" then went with help as the more Biblical approach. One reason I had gone dark for two weeks here at Patheos was that I experienced a back injury that took me off my feet and out of action for se … [Read more...]

Self Esteem Test: How Would You Describe Yourself in Just One Word?

Annoying. My six-year-old son recently began describing himself with that one word -- annoying. He took some pride in it, in fact. Maybe it was because he'd been watching Dennis the Menace a few times too many. He does resemble Dennis a bit, come to think of it. More likely it had more to do with his siblings labeling him as just that on far too many occasions. You'll be happy to know he has now switched to another, more fitting word -- handsome.Take a simple self esteem test. How would you de … [Read more...]

How to Stop Being Afraid

For my Patheos friends, this post kicks off a series over the next few weeks as we unpack the following steps from Psalm 46 in more detail to discover God's wisdom on how to stop being afraid.  Enjoy! Smack dab in the middle between real life and real faith is -- real fear.  Fear of failure. Fear that we'll look foolish. Fear that everyone will laugh when we do. Fear that __________ -- fill in the blank with your own fear. There's no shortage of them.I believe that for those who have trusted in … [Read more...]

Why Your Faith Does Determine Your Politics

One of many thoughtful responses to my recent post 5 Things I Don't Understand about Christians Who Voted for Obama caught my attention. It expressed a thought that I saw reflected in other responses, though not with such clarity.  It was this:"My theology does not determine my politics." I couldn't disagree more.Tell that to the 9/11 hijackers. Tell that to William Wilberforce. Or to Martin Luther King, Jr. Or to Jesus, Paul, David, or countless other Biblical figures. Let's say what we … [Read more...]

Election 2012: Do Government Programs Produce Government-Friendly Voters?

I am pro-government.There. I just shocked some of you into spewing coffee all over your keyboard. After you clean that up, allow me explain.God made it clear through countless inspired writers of Scripture that He ordained government. In fact, he added a pretty sobering warning that whoever resists the authority of government, resists God. He also added that, should the two collide, we are to obey God rather than government. Unfortunately, because government is comprised of sinful human … [Read more...]

Election 2012: We Are All Victims Now, Mr. President

C.S. Lewis said in his famous sermon "The Weight of Glory" that if he were to ask twenty Christian leaders in his day what was the chief virtue, nineteen of them would answer Selflessness. Lewis argued that previous centuries of Christians would have answered instead with Love as the noblest of virtues. He was right in assessing his generation. But the 2012 Presidential election this week leads me to think that most Americans today would answer that question differently yet again. I suspect m … [Read more...]

Why I Give Embracing Obscurity by Anonymous a Mixed Review

It's not often we get to critique something done by an anonymous person -- well, come to think of it, I suppose we give mixed reviews of such people all the time. The idiot who set up the construction barrels in a confusing way on the expressway, the moron who didn't reserve the right hotel room for us, or the nameless mechanic who obviously didn't check our oil when we took it in 7 months ago.Ya, I guess we critique anonymous people all the time. But few have written a book about … [Read more...]

See What Jesus Said about Suffering: “I Told You So!”

Did you ever come across something Jesus said that, if anyone else had said it, you'd be wondering about the motive behind it? I confess that as I read what he said to the disciples about suffering, it felt a lot like he was callously saying, "I told you so!" In fact, if you had said the same thing to me, I would have expected it to come with an upturned nose and an arrogant snort. Here's what He told them: They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills … [Read more...]
