Big-screen Bible movies may have been snubbed completely at the Oscars this year, but at least one made-for-TV Bible film got some recognition from its peers when the Primetime Emmy Award nominees were announced this morning.

Killing Jesus, which premiered on the National Geographic Channel four months ago, was nominated for Outstanding Television Movie, along with Agatha Christie’s Poirot: Curtain, Poirot’s Last Case (Acorn TV), Bessie (HBO), Grace of Monaco (Lifetime), Hello Ladies: The Movie (HBO) and Nightingale (HBO).

Bessie has 12 nominations altogether whereas none of the other films in that category have more than two, plus Bessie beat Killing Jesus at the Critics Choice Television Awards in May, so it would seem that Bessie is the film to beat here.

There were no nominations for Lifetime’s The Red Tent, Up TV’s Noah’s Ark, CNN’s Finding Jesus or NBC’s recently-cancelled A.D. The Bible Continues.

Interestingly, however, CBS’s The Dovekeepers — which isn’t technically a Bible movie but does take place in first-century Judea and was produced by A.D.’s Mark Burnett and Roma Downey — got a single nomination for its main-title theme music.

Burnett and Downey’s miniseries The Bible was nominated for three Emmys in 2013 — miniseries or movie, sound editing, and sound mixing — but it lost in two of those categories to Behind the Candelabra and in the third to American Horror Story.

This year’s winners will be announced on September 12 and September 20.
