Noah: a list of the film’s deleted scenes, with pictures July 20, 2015

Darren Aronofsky’s Noah came out on Blu-Ray and DVD one year ago this month, and to mark the occasion, I have rounded up every bit of footage I can think of that was deleted from the film itself but can still be seen in the trailers and featurettes.

In a few cases, the footage is in the film, but it has been changed — through tweaks to the dialogue or visual effects — since it was first seen in the trailers.

Here’s the list, in the order that these scenes would have appeared in the film:

The snakeskin leaps from Lamech’s finger. A shot of this deleted visual effect is in the international trailer released November 14, 2013.

In the finished film, the snakeskin glows but does not leap:

Fog rolls across the ground. A shot of fog rolling across the ground was featured in a version of Noah’s first vision, in a trailer that was first released in Brazilian Portuguese in November 2013 and then in English on February 24, 2014.

Naameh asks, “What did He say?” This question, which she asks in the published screenplay, can be heard in the domestic trailer released November 14, 2013. It was replaced in the finished film with, “Will He help us?”

Noah says, “When they come, they will be desperate, and they will be many.” This deleted scene, which shows Noah standing outside the Ark, was included in the ‘Ark’ featurette released to YouTube March 6, 2014. The audio was also included in the domestic trailer released November 14, 2013.

This line of dialogue does not appear in the published screenplay, so it is difficult to say who Noah is speaking to or what context he was saying it in — though the one time the film does show him standing in front of that doorway in broad daylight, it is in the scene where he tells Naameh that the human race must die with their family:

Samyaza says, “The Creator weeps.” This deleted scene, which takes place after the rain begins to fall but before the battle for the Ark begins, is in the featurette ‘The Watchers,’ which is available only on the Target edition of the Blu-Ray.

This scene must have been deleted fairly late in the editing process: the effects seem to be complete, and the line is spoken by Nick Nolte, who recorded Samyaza’s dialogue just two months before the film came out. But it was in the script for a long time; a version of it can be seen in this panel from the (earlier) graphic novel:

Tubal-Cain wakes up on the Ark and sees that someone has bandaged his leg. Parts of this deleted scene are in the Blu-Ray featurette ‘The Ark Interior: Animals Two by Two.’

Ham helps Tubal-Cain fix his leg. Parts of this deleted scene are in the Blu-Ray featurette ‘The Ark Interior: Animals Two by Two.’

Tubal-Cain tells Noah, “You watched the whole of mankind perish….” This deleted bit of dialogue is in the Blu-Ray featurette ‘The Ark Interior: Animals Two by Two.’ It was also featured in a clip that was posted to the movie’s Facebook page.

Noah falls down drunk. A shot of Noah wearing pants but no shirt, and falling to his knees on the beach sometime after the Flood, was included in the international trailer released November 14, 2013.

And that’s about it. Let me know in the comments if there are any other deleted bits.
