Watch: My birthday, October 1, in the movies October 1, 2015

Have you ever wanted to see a montage of movie clips that refer to New Year’s Day or Halloween? What about less obvious dates like January 23 or May 10?

Ron Reed has. Over the last few years, my friend — who founded Pacific Theatre here in Vancouver and was once a BC Christian News columnist like myself — has been keeping track of references to specific dates in film, and now he is using this data to create supercuts that collect as many references to a particular date as possible.

Ron typically posts a few of these videos every month at his Date Movies blog. And today he gave me a special birthday treat: a video devoted to October 1.

I am particularly pleased to see Bullets over Broadway featured so prominently here, as it is not only one of my favorite Woody Allen films, but I can remember seeing it at the Vancouver International Film Festival on my birthday in 1994. So there’s a birthday connection there! (I turned 24 then. I am 45 now.)

It’s also fun to see Clint Eastwood’s Changeling on this list, as it is one of the very few films that is set partly not only in Vancouver, but in Vancouver of the past.

One movie not included in this collection is a Nigerian film called, well, October 1. In addition to being the birthday for Jimmy Carter, Julie Andrews, George Peppard, Walter Matthau, Richard Harris and a few others that you might have heard of, October 1 is also Nigerian Independence Day, hence the movie’s title.

I’ve never seen the film (which is on Netflix), but you can watch a trailer for it here:

Are there any other references to October 1 in film? If so, please let me know in the comments below. And while you’re at it, check out Ron’s Date Movies blog to see if he has already covered any dates that might be of significance to you, too!
